Job Description - Director of Worship and Music

Purpose:

The Director of Worship and Music is a new position responsible for designing and executing the worship environments of the Church to support the Church’s mission of working together to follow Christ in joyfully serving our neighbors. 

Organization:

The Director of Worship and Music will report to the Senior Pastor with oversight coming from the Session and Administration and Personnel Ministry Team. The position will be a full-time, exempt, salaried staff position. Hours of work will include evening and weekend activities.

Responsibilities: 

 

Specific role will evolve over time as the position is further developed but general responsibilities should include:

 

  • Leading and working with both the Pastor and Worship Team to plan all worship services of the Church by:
  • Implementing, coordinating, and providing overall direction and leadership for all worship services inclusive of Sunday and potential mid-week services. Styles of worship may include traditional, modern, and blended
  • Providing leadership and directing of practices and worship service performances of various musical groups inclusive of praise team, adult choir, children’s choir, bell choir and instrumentalists. This also includes coordination of multi-media, lighting, technology team and various guest musicians
  • Coordinates with the Pastor to plan music and other elements of worship
  • Plans and implements special services such as Christmas Eve, Easter, Maundy Thursday, Lent, Pentecost, Scottish-Heritage, Thanksgiving, Advent, etc.
  • Developing ways to use music to reach out to the community evangelistically by presenting outreach musical performances two to three times per year or other creative opportunities
  • Providing oversight to other worship service groups such as acolytes, readers, ushers etc.
  • Serving as a part of the Executive Team on staff and attending weekly staff meetings to provide worship service plans and updates as needed
  • Participating in the Worship Ministry Team monthly meetings and coordinating efforts including the annual budget
  • Communicating with guest Pastors and speakers about themes, scripture, technology capabilities and assisting them as needed
  • Overseeing musical needs related to weddings and funerals
  • Recommends the tuning, maintenance, replacement and/ or purchase of musical instruments
  • Maintains inventory of church music and ensures compliance with copyright laws. Secures any needed licenses for media and music
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by Senior Pastor, Session, or the Worship Ministry Team

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Ability to plan, organize, direct, and lead the worship ministry of a dynamic and growing church
  • Proficiency in both singing and playing at least one musical instrument inclusive of the keyboard
  • Ability to lead instrumental groups, choirs, and the congregation in singing
  • Supports and shows an appreciation for both traditional and modern music and worship styles
  • Exhibits mature and growing faith in Jesus Christ with ability to share and lead others in the faith
  • Understand and support the SCPCPH mission, values and culture
  • Experience in the engagement of the congregation in worship
  • Ability to develop and implement new programs while working in a team environment
  • Demonstrate an encouraging, positive attitude and the ability to translate vision into reality
  • Must have strong relationship building skills and a desire to be a leader of the Church
  • Attention to detail and follow through on assignments and deadlines
  • Bachelor’s Degree in music, religion, or a related field preferred

An exciting new church which has come together as the result of merging two historic congregations. Over the last 3 years, we have successfully overcome the hurtles of bringing two congregations together into one church. We have just completed an extensive Visioning process led by Clarity Navigator and are implementing that Vision in the life of our church family and community. Part of that implantation is the hiring of new staff to help us fulfill our mission.
