Job Description

Shelterwood Live-in Mentor Position

Shelterwood is a Christian residential treatment center located on 220 wooded acres in Independence, Missouri. For 40 years, the organization has brought hope and restoration to families by helping teens overcome depression, anxiety, trauma-related disorders, technology addictions, substance abuse and other behavioral and mental health conditions. Each teen is supported by an interdisciplinary team of Christian men and women which include licensed therapists, certified addiction counselors, licensed teachers at our accredited on-campus high school, and around-the-clock mentors.

The word "Shelterwood" describes a forestry technique in which older, stronger trees shelter and protect younger trees on the forest floor until they stand, grow and thrive on their own. In the same way, Shelterwood Mentors offer struggling teens a safe, loving place to heal and flourish.

If you are looking for a year after college and beyond to:

  • Participate with God and the restoration of families in crisis with at-risk teens.
  • Expand your career opportunities at Shelterwood or through Shelterwood's network of relationships in the community.
  • Earn money to support yourself, continue graduate studies, and/or pay off school loans...

The Doulos Leadership Institute @ Shelterwood is for you!

What is the Doulos Leadership Institute @ Shelterwood?

Simply put, the goal of this program is to produce the next generation faith leaders in mental health, social work, secondary education, ministry, and nonprofit administration.

The DLI @Shelterwood is designed to accomplish these four goals in one year:

  • Goal #1: GROW in relationship with God in Biblical community
  • Goal #2: TRAIN in vocation and life skills
  • Goal #3: PRODUCE next generation faith leaders
  • Goal #4: DO relational ministry

Mentors, also called Direct Care Staff, are the backbone of Shelterwood’s relational approach. Time and time again, parents of Shelterwood graduates tell us that their teen’s Mentors made all the difference in their healing and growth. Mentors make a profound impact on the teens in their care. As they work with teens, Mentors lay groundwork for social, academic and spiritual growth of the students. Shelterwood is not designed to simply create behavioral change, but to cultivate deep heart change and set students up to succeed in life.

We are currently looking for energetic, highly motivated, responsible, mature and single (as in not married) individuals (between the ages of 21 - 40) looking to become life-changing mentors for at-risk teens.
