About 2nd Street Community Church

OUR MISSION STATEMENT …

"BECOMING MORE LIKE JESUS CHRIST BY

         LOVING GOD

            LOVING PEOPLE

            and SERVING OUR WORLD"

WHO WE ARE …

2nd Street Community Church is a community not defined by labels or expectations. We are not defined by the things we do but rather by the One who created us, so we believe that each person, regardless of their station in life, should be welcome to gather. We are a community without “masks” where each person should be able to pursue who they are created to be in Jesus.

WE VALUE …

Love - Everyone deserves to experience the love and acceptance of Jesus Christ

Authenticity - Everyone should have a space where they feel safe to be who they are

Truth - We believe that the Bible, our experiences, and the Holy Spirit work together to offer formation and

    guidance for our lives

Growth - Life with Jesus is a life of continuous movement toward God

Community - The foundation of the church is the relationships found within

Simplicity - We believe in loving God and loving others; everything else is secondary

Serving - We are created to use who we are in service to God and others

Seeking - We believe Christ is present with everyone and we challenge each other to be open and honest

    with God

Equality - We believe every person bears the image of God and every follower of Jesus is a minister

OUR STORY …

With a heart to reach the unchurched with the message of Jesus Christ, 2nd Street launched its first service in Newberg Oregon, on October 28th, 1990 as an extension ministry of Newberg Friends Church. An average of 160 people attended a weekly Sunday service in the first year in The Friends Center building at College and 2nd Streets in Newberg.

A second service was added in 1994 as weekly attendance grew to 300. Along with the growth of 2nd Street came many new challenges including space requirements to handle future growth, staffing to care for congregational needs, and the development of leadership.

As 2nd Street’s ministries matured it was determined that it should become autonomous from Newberg Friends Church. In 1998 Newberg Friends formally separated from 2nd Street in order for 2nd Street to become its own entity. 2nd Street is now an independent member of Northwest Yearly Meeting of Friends, an evangelical Quaker denomination. In order to meet its growing facility needs, in September of the same year, 2nd Street relocated to The Chehalem Armory Center on Morton Street.

In 1999 a 3,500 square foot Youth Building was built to provide room for the expanding children’s and youth ministries. Additional staff was added at this time.

In 2014 2nd Street relocated to the Chehalem Cultural Center in order to be more centrally located and to be able to more effectively feed into Newberg as a whole.
