About Whitewater Crossing Christian Church

Our Story

Whitewater Crossing Christian Church has been privileged to serve people and communities in Greater Cincinnati and beyond for more than 100 years. In 1915 twenty-three people who shared a vision for a new church in Cincinnati’s growing Westwood neighborhood began meeting for a Sunday afternoon Bible study. Within a year the group was ready to plant a new congregation affiliated with the Restoration Movement, building their first small facility at the corner of Glenmore and Meadow Aves in Cheviot. The new “Westwood Cheviot Church of Christ” grew to 230 members by 1922, and over the next several decades established itself as a leading congregation in the fellowship of Christian Churches. A landlocked campus with very limited space (and almost no parking!) limited opportunities for expansion, which led the church’s enrollment to plateau and gradually decline by the 1990s.

To reverse this trend, in 2002 the Elders resolved to reposition the church for growth by moving to a new facility on a 74-acre site further west in Cleves/Whitewater Township. The congregation also adopted a new name to reflect its strategic location at the crossroads of several major highways, and its desire to become a gathering point for people of all backgrounds: “Whitewater Crossing.” The new building opened in December 2007, and over the next decade the church’s weekly attendance grew from ca. 350 to over 1500. Between 2010-2020, facilities were expanded to double the square footage of adult ministry space, triple the square footage of children/student’s ministry facilities, and create a home for a new on-site “Life Center” that serves under-resourced families throughout the region. Online offerings were expanded during COVID, allowing Whitewater to reach a much broader regional audience.

Over the past 3 years, the church has driven outreach to new communities and cast a vision for an emphasis on disciple-making amongst our body. Whitewater Crossing is looking for the next long-term Senior Minister to continue pursuing the mission that God is calling us to. This local church stands on a firm foundation and looks forward to its second century of mission: to help people find hope in Jesus and a home in His local church.

Our Vision & Values

Our Vision is to have fully engaged and authentic biblical communities.

This vision is reflected in our mission statement: Whitewater Crossing Christian Church exists to help people find hope in Jesus and a home in His local church. “Help,” “hope,” and “home” summarize our philosophy of ministry.

To ensure that Whitewater lives up to its values, in 2022 the staff and Elders adopted 5 key desired outcomes that guide our strategies by defining “success.” These outcomes serve as targets as we reflect on the past and plan for the future.

The Five Outcomes

  1. We will encourage, empower, and equip (all) people to become disciples, who make disciples, who make disciples.
  2. We will partner with like-minded local, regional and global leaders, sharing the Gospel to the ends of the earth. (Network)
  3. We will continually train up (some) leaders to launch & to lead great things for the Kingdom. (Network)
  4. We will actively provide multiple points of engagement for people to get connected in becoming and making disciples
  5. We will properly steward Kingdom resources to accomplish all the above.

Going forward, Whitewater Crossing strongly desires to be known as a “sending” church: one that disciples and empowers individual believers to change their homes, communities, and workplaces.

Our Beliefs

Whitewater Crossing Christian Church is an independent congregation closely affiliated with the Christian Churches/Churches of Christ. As such, we believe that faith in Christ is essential to salvation and that the Bible is the authoritative Word of God and the sole foundation of the Church’s beliefs, witness, teaching, and practices (https://whitewatercrossing.org/about-us --> Beliefs)

Our congregation is overseen by a body of Elders who work closely with the Senior Minister under a governance model developed with Logic Board (https://logicboard.org/about).
