Church Technical Director interview questions and answers

Essential questions you should ask when hiring a Church Technical Director.

Do you ever wonder how all the lights, cameras, slides, and music are all set up during worship? That would be because of the technical director role of the church. The technical director is responsible for all things, as their title suggests, technical. They oversee the IT part of the church in making sure that all the churches technology is running efficiently and effectively. They are an essential part of the church and we here at JustChurchJobs want to help you find the right fit!

Here we have a list of what we think are the best interview questions to ask when looking for the right candidate to hire to fill your technical director role. We hope to be of service to you and at the very least hope that these questions help you to figure out some of your own questions that you want to ask in your interviews! Let’s jump right in then!

What is your testimony?

We at JustChurchJobs believe this question the most important and first question that you should always ask no matter the candidate or role you are looking to fill. A testimony is an individual’s story of how God has transformed them through their life before they met Christ, when the met Christ, and after they met Christ. Sharing one’s testimony requires vulnerability which is a necessary skill to have in ministry and in sharing the gospel.

Can you go into detail about the software programs you are trained in?

It goes without saying that a technical director needs to know all things tech and have a professional understanding of how programs for the media work. If the candidate is not professionally trained in those kinds of programs, then they should not be considered any further.

If you had a team of people, how would you manage them?

The technical director of the church is going to more than likely have IT staff who work under them. You need to get a good grasp of what their management style looks like and how they would manage a group of people to make sure that there are no issues with things such as the churches Wi-Fi, computers, emails, phones, and other technology

Can you provide some examples of projects you have previously worked on?

Asking this question to candidates will give you a window into how each individual candidate works and what their creative style looks like. A technical director needs to be creative in how they handle and use tech for the church, creative not only in their ideas to incorporate unique technical aspects into the church, but creative in how they handle potential issues that may come up.

How do you make sure that you complete tasks in a timely manner?

This is an important question to ask a potential candidate as a lot of the technical issues a church may experience cannot go unchecked for long periods of time. For example, if the church staff’s emails were not working or if the churches WI-FI went out, it would be hard for any of the staff to complete any work. Thus, the candidate must have a system in place for themselves to be able to get work done efficiently so that the church can stay functioning.

How well do you work with a team?

As mentioned in one of the questions above, the technical director would more than likely be over a team of other IT people. As such they would need to be good at working on a team and would need to get along well with the people that they would be over. If they cannot work well on a team, then they should not be considered any further.

We at JustChurchJobs hope that this interview question guide helps in your search for the right candidate, and we also hope that at the very least we have helped you get a general idea of what to ask your candidates as you look to fill the technical director role in your church. We are here to help in any way that we can and if you’re having a hard time finding good quality candidates then JustChurchJobs can help with that too!
