About the Messiah Church

Our congregation is 125 years old. We have been through many changes. Many years of being phenomenally blessed by outpourings of the Holy Spirit along with some challenging years. Yet God has always been faithful to this congregation. Many members who remain were part of the Jesus People of the 1970’s and were profoundly influenced by the ministry of Dick Bieber and still live by his teachings.

Despite the huge numbers of people who were part of Messiah… we were never hyper focused in growth. Instead we have been blessed to send forth laborers from our own fields.

As the years go by we are much smaller.. Many left to serve in other ministries, some in disappointment, some as life caused their love to grow cold, some passed to the other side of the Jordan and some seeking to find once again the power, the love, and the holy thing they experienced at Messiah.

Many young people who were nurtured into the love of Christ at Messiah have left as well… moving on to other fellowships that better meet the needs of them and their families.

We are currently facing a time of trial as our congregation ages and ministries are disappearing due to lack of people and the impact of Covid.

Despite being an inner-city church many of our members come from outside the neighborhood. Despite that our congregation is diverse racially and economically, but still doesn’t match the composition of the neighborhood. There is also a diverse a mix of views on political and social issues.

Those of us who remain…do so for various reasons… tradition, faithfulness to the congregation, clinging to precious memories, some remain faithful to a vision, and many of us just feel called to stay. Despite the challenges we are a body committed to be his disciples and follow where he leads.
