Assistant Pastor
Oakhurst United Methodist Church – Seminole, FL
General Description:
The Assistant Pastor’s primary purpose is to carry out the vision of Oakhurst UMC by effectively developing Membership Care systems, Discipleship Systems, and advancing the mission of Oakhurst UMC in imaginative and missional ways. This position is responsible for coordinating and overseeing the Discipleship Ministries of the church including children’s, youth, teen, young adult, and adult ministries while functioning as part of a team leadership model which includes the Senior Pastor and other team members. This positional also provides structure and oversight for Membership Care and Advancement in coordination with the Senior Pastor, Certified Lay Ministers, and other team members of the congregation.
Education and Experience:
- Master’s of Divinity Degree from an accredited University Senate Seminary preferred
- Bachelor’s Degree required
- 3 years experience in leadership in a ministry setting (as staff, congregational leader, or pastor)
- Missional Mindset
- Catalytic leadership of emerging ministries a plus

Essential Job Functions
Weekly:
Prepare for Sunday morning programming (during the week):
· Including purchasing and preparing children and youth curriculum for volunteer leaders
· Preparing adult educational spaces
· Coordinating Alpha and other ongoing adult Discipleship opportunities in conjunction with the Senior Pastor
· Use church marketing strategies to promote Oakhurst UMC in the community
· Use Constant Contact to connect with members and constituents via email
· Write devotional for weekly email from the Pastor
Monthly:
· Ensure the educational and discipleship spaces, specifically for children’s and youth ministry, are properly prepared for the month ahead
· Ensure the required technology is properly deployed for the month throughout the given space parameters
· Identify new church constituents for invitation into service to the church prior to membership
· Prepare and assist Senior Pastor in Coffee with the Pastor
· Prepare and assist Senior Pastor in leading quarterly Foundation’s orientation
· Using the information from the membership info sheet, put church leaders in touch with new members as needed. Check in with new members after 6 months to be sure that they’ve found connections with our ministry teams.
In Support of:
Volunteers
· Recruit, train, encourage and empower ministry team leaders in all areas of discipleship and membership. Connect with leaders consistently.
· Prepare and provide regular training opportunities for leaders within the congregation
Other Tasks:
Special Events
· Coordinate missional outreach opportunities with church leadership
· Coordinate internal and external discipleship opportunities with church leadership and in the community
· Strategically integrate the congregation into areas of need identified within the community
Administration Duties
· Provide oversight to various components of the budgeting process
· Weekly staff meetings for the development and deployment of ministry within the church
· Bi-monthly reports to the Church Council
· Regular Engagement with the Senior Pastor in carrying out the vision and mission of the congregation
Worship Leadership
· Ability to lead worship including preaching on a regular rotation in coordination with Senior Pastor
· Exhibited comfort level in writing, collaborating, and coordinating worship experiences
