Assistant Director of Music

Job purpose

Provide assistance with the planning, directing and administering of music of the church in collaboration with the Director of Music; attend choir rehearsals one evening per week and Sunday morning worship to accompany and/or direct choir(s) as needed; assist with the organization and administration of all other aspects of music ministries on a mutually agreed and as needed basis.

Duties and responsibilities

• Provide keyboard accompaniment for 1 hour each Wednesday evening for Chancel Choir rehearsals and for 2 Sundays per month for worship services. Occasional availability to accompany at an additional Sunday or evening worship service. September through May. This is a 9-month position with minimal summer responsibilities.

• Lead music for worship as a substitute for the Director of Music, as needed.

• Rehearse and direct Children’s Choir(s), ages 5 years through 8th grade, September through May.

• Introduce and lead children in liturgical and Christian music in worship for participation.

• Recruit and engage children to participate in choir.

• Conduct weekly rehearsals.

• Lead Children’s Choir in worship 1 Sunday per month, coordinating the schedule with the Director of Music.

• Select age-appropriate music, maintaining professional standards in music selection.

• Communicate with the administrative office, parents/guardians regarding rehearsal and performance schedules.

• Assist Director of Music with Sunday School music and leadership, as needed.

• Maintain open lines of communication with the Director of Music and staff and attend planning meetings as needed.

• Assist with the music library organization and filing.

Qualifications

Qualifications include:

• Must be 18 years or older

• Associate or bachelor’s degree preferred

• Proficient in keyboards, sight reading and accompaniment and music styles

• Possess a passion for and knowledge of church music

• Have a working knowledge of music technology

• Ability to conduct a children’s choir and work well with young musicians

• Ability to work as a team member

• Undergo and pass a background check

Working environment

Ability to work in a Christian congregation; supervise and monitor the safety of children.

Physical requirements

Ability to sit at a keyboard bench, stand to direct a choir, lift and move musical instruments and supplies.

Compensation

Part time, $15,000 annual salary, paid time off and continuing education
