Ebenezer Christian Reformed Church (Berwyn, IL) has begun a search for a Lead Pastor to support its mission and vision by providing spiritual leadership for the Council, staff, and congregation. Relying on the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the Lead Pastor will be responsible for the direction, thrust, and ministry of the congregation, including its priorities and spiritual vitality, as it lives into the implications of being a bi-lingual congregation in a diverse community.
Personal Qualifications—The Lead Pastor will:
- Be able to give testimony to his love for the Lord and his call to pastoral ministry.
- Have a deep passion to understand and teach the truths of God’s Word from a Reformed perspective.
- Be fluent in both Spanish and English.
- Be a life-long learner who benefits from the voices of others speaking into his life.
- Be socially intelligent, able to connect with a wide range of people (ethnicities).
Professional Competencies: The Lead Pastor will be gifted as:
- A communicator, able to craft and deliver biblical and relevant sermons that effectively speak to both new and maturing Christians.
- A worship leader who enjoys planning and participating in corporate worship services.
- A leader with experience developing strategic initiatives and managing change while guiding the Council, staff, and congregation into a new season of ministry.
- A team-builder who leads by example and who raises up new leaders from among the congregation.
- A pastor whose care for the spiritual well-being of the congregation is characterized by love and humility while being strengthened by discernment and prayer.
- Primary Responsibilities:Preaching: The Lead Pastor will thoughtfully and prayerfully prepare and boldly deliver biblically based and relevant sermons which, with the help of the Holy Spirit, equip listeners with an understanding of biblical truths and encourage them to apply those truths to their lives.
- Worship: The Lead Pastor, with assistance from congregants, will plan and lead the Sunday services.
- Discipleship and Mentorship: The Lead Pastor will provide timely spiritual direction and pastoral care for those seeking baptism, profession of faith, church membership, marriage, healing, and encouragement, as well as for those suffering the loss of love.
- Leadership and Management: The Lead Pastor will serve as the spiritual and organizational leader of the congregation partnering with the Council towards a unified vision for the future of the church.
- Public Presence: The Senior Pastor will represent the congregation in the community and denomination.
Supervisory Relationships:
- The Lead Pastor reports to and is accountable to the Elders.
- The Lead Pastor leads and encourages the Council, staff, and ministry leaders.
Expectations – The Lead Pastor will:
- Minister in both Spanish and English.
- Meet or exceed the requirements for ordination as a Minister of the Word & Sacrament in the Christian Reformed Church in North America (CRCNA). Consequently, he will be ordained or be ordainable as such, though ordained individuals from other historically Reformed denominations will be considered.
- Affirm a traditional view of marriage, gender, and human sexuality.
Ebenezer Christian Reformed Church, a 155-year-old congregation that was organized by Dutch immigrants on Chicago’s West Side, is a dynamic, diverse, bi-lingual fellowship of believers doing life together in the tri-city area of Berwyn, Cicero and Oak Park, IL Blessed by a lovely neighborhood campus, which includes a sanctuary, fellowship hall, classrooms, gymnasium, parsonage, parking lot, and more, the congregation has established a multi-faceted ministry to one another and to the community.
As a Christian Reformed congregation, Ebenezer is firmly rooted in the Reformed tradition which includes a commitment to the authority of Scripture and biblical preaching. It is also an Evangelical congregation that hopes to see their lives, as well as others in the community, transformed by the Gospel.
Reflecting its origin as an immigrant congregation in a diverse community, Ebenezer serves a diverse community with a growing number of Spanish speaking immigrants. In response, congregational leadership has committed itself to ministering in both Spanish and English.
