Job Description

The role of the Children’s Pastor(s) is to oversee the life and direction of Refuge Church Malin (RCM) Children from the ages of Birth to sixth grade, with additional emphasis on creatively building and maintaining a cooperative spirit with other churches, schools and organizations including young adults, parents, and families as they relate to the spiritual and emotional health of the children involved in the life of the Refuge Church Malin (RCM) and Refuge City Church (RCC) organization. 


1. Personal Expectations


A discernible call to children’s ministry, including teaching, evangelism, spiritual growth and character development within the students under your care.

Be a resident of Malin, active in and aware of community events and day to day life of residents in the community, allowing yourself to be available for ministry opportunities which occur outside of normal business hours. 

A relational ministry style.

A creative ability to communicate the Word of God to Children.

Expect to bring sound biblical counseling as needed to any person God brings before you, understanding sometimes ministry falls outside the realm of your children’s ministry portfolio. Understand the Administrative staff may refer a counseling candidate into your care based on need or the topic of counseling.

Consistent personal Spiritual Growth in Christ evidenced by health in your marriage, family, time management, and personal vision.

Arriving early and prepared for every event/venue.        (If you are on time, You are late.)


2. Children’s Ministry Expectations 

Responsible for championing Refuge Church Malin’s vision and values at all children’s services and events. The Children’s Pastor(s) will assist the Lead Pastor in strategic planning in the execution of the church’s mission and vision within the area of children’s ministry. These strategies include: 

Ministering to all children between the ages birth and sixth grade, with a subsequent focus on the transition to youth group age. Also, not neglecting the needs of the family unit the child lives within by providing great parental/guardian communication and support. Also building into the child’s spiritual life through Christian biblical education, evangelism opportunities, and character development.


Work with local churches, organizations, schools, teachers and parents to build relationships in the community and assist in programs that line up with the core values and vision of RCM.

Weekly children’s services where children can receive Christ as Savior, forgiveness of sin and have opportunities for baptism and to be baptized in the Holy Spirit.


To serve as an advocate, role model, spiritual mentor and an encourager of children and their families.


Coordinate children’s worship ministries (i.e. Sunday mornings, Wednesday nights and special events) with appropriate teams to give opportunity to the children and their gifting. Work together with administrator or lead pastor to plan these opportunities and coordinate with other departments.


To create and maintain a children’s ministry website and calendar that compliments the main church website in order for parents/guardians to remain informed about important events (dates, upcoming events and deadlines, expenses, times, etc.)


Disciple and equip for leadership at least four (4) new Children’s Ministry Volunteers per year.

To solicit and secure the involvement, assistance and support of parents and other churches in the community in Children’s Ministry.


Oversee the pastoral care (birthdays/cards, hospital visits, sick visits, prayer connections, phone calls, emails, etc.) of all children and their families, while working in collaboration with other staff ministers who may be doing the same, to maintain consistent language, mission and ministerial strategies.


Following up with new families/children the first time they visit a main service or children’s service/event.

Following up on absentees after three missed children’s events.

Expect to promote and facilitate all activities of the children’s ministry


Develop and project a yearly children’s ministry budget including anticipated income from fund raisers and projected expenses. (To be approved by administrator and Church Board at the beginning of each year.)

Maintain accurate records and accounting of funds to maintain budget and prevent overspending.

Promote and facilitate your own events with newsletters, social media, pastoral staff communication in staff meetings, advance notice, thorough details, etc. (Must eliminate confusion and miscommunication at all costs.)

Attend and contribute to weekly staff meeting and staff growth times.

Operate in a gracious spirit when conflicts arise, being a solution finder and problem solver in order to work toward a workable solution that is understood and agreed upon by all parties requesting vans.

Direct report to the Lead Pastor.
