Olivet Baptist Church currently offers two English language worship services featuring contrasting styles (Sanctuary and Upper Room). All ministerial staff serve and lead our entire church body in various ways, but this job description focuses on our Sanctuary Worship leadership needs. (Sanctuary Worship is currently about 150 people (80/20 split between in person and online) worshiping in a blended traditional style, featuring frequent use of hymns, often accompanied by organ and piano, and musicians from the congregation, a Praise Band and adult choir.)
The Worship Arts Minister (Sanctuary) will work closely with the senior pastor in cultivating worship services and worship teams (choir, praise band, individual participants, hand bells, etc.) that help lead our congregation to see and savor the greatness of God in Jesus Christ, in the power of the Spirit. The Worship Arts Minister will lead the choir(s) to enhance congregational worship with special music and to encourage greater congregational participation in worship.
Fostering dynamic congregational worship, singing the best of the old and the best of the new is a core component of our church culture; we seek an individual who is called and gifted by God for servant leadership the following areas:
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Planning our weekly Sunday 10:30 am Sanctuary Worship service. Choosing congregational music (traditional and contemporary music) that engages the congregation in worship and prayer and supports the reading and preaching of God's Word. Doing or delegating all the logistical work involved in the Sanctuary Worship Service, including all media (slides, videos, recording, etc.) that will be used.) NOTE: Much of the planning, communicating, and preparing can be done remotely (email, cloud based planning documents and AV presentation software, etc.)
2. Modeling and leading heartfelt worship in a relational style that draws people in, encourages participation, and points people to Jesus.
3. Recruiting, auditioning, teaching, and training musicians in the church to serve the congregation with musical skill and humility. (Choir, Praise Band, accompanist(s), soloists and small group musicians, etc.)
4. Leading weekly choir rehearsals that serve a dual purpose: (A) preparation to lead in worship on Sunday and (B) cultivating fruitful disciples and Christ-centered community among the musicians.
5. Building on our legacy of quality, quantity, and variety of music and casting a vision for where God might be calling our congregation and our musicians to grow in new expressions of worship.
6. Serving as a member of the Olivet ministry team and demonstrating commitment to the congregation and its purpose.
REQUIRED QUALITIES:
1. Hold a clear understanding of Biblical worship
2. Meet Biblical qualifications for a ministry leader and embrace the call to ministry leadership, influence, and responsibility
3. Demonstrate giftedness in leading congregational worship
4. Be equipped to lead the choir and others, both musically and spiritually (To maintain and build on the legacy of choral and traditional music at Olivet, the candidate would have a music degree, plus 3-5 years of church music experience. Seminary training would be a huge plus, but ministry experience and track record should take precedence.)
5. Possess strong leadership and organizational skills
6. Commit to growing into the ministry team and church leadership
7. Articulate a clear theological alignment with the senior pastor and ministry team.
NOTE: Compensation is set from $20-23,000 for 12 hours per week.
