Shelter Coordinator 



The main mission of the City Rescue Mission of Lansing, since its founding, has remained to teach the Word of God as found in the Christian Bible (Romans 10:13-15), edify and equip the saints to be committed followers of Jesus Christ and His teachings (Ephesians 4:11-13), and present an authentic representation of traditional, Biblical Christianity (Philippians 1:9-11). For this reason, employees will be guided by the Doctrinal Statement established by the Board of Directors. 


Reports To: The Shelter Coordinator will report to the Director of the assigned facility. 


Job Overview: 

This role is vital in the running of the Shelters of the City Rescue Mission. The Coordinator oversees guests while they are in the shelter, ensuring a calm flow of guests throughout the schedule of the shift. The Coordinator must be friendly and encouraging while maintaining shelter policy and procedure with consistency and firmness. The Coordinator must also be able to complete tasks independently and accurately while staying calm under pressure.  


Expected Schedule- 2nd Shift- Full or Part Time Available- Exact schedule varies by facility- Shelter Coordinator is expected to be available between 3pm-1am, as scheduled. Weekends and Holidays as scheduled, on rotation.  4-8-hour shifts.  


Responsibilities and Duties: 

  • Support and supervise guests during all activities and times during shift 
  • Have a good understanding of shelter policies and procedures and execute them properly 
  • Maintain good communication with the department, utilizing all available tools 
  • Maintain a clean and orderly workspace 
  • Cleaning, stocking, organizing as needed/assigned  
  • Assist with new guest intakes, understanding this process and executing it properly  
  • Attend all meetings and training sessions as scheduled  
  • Show the love of Christ, be ready to share the gospel, and pray with guests regularly 

Qualifications: 

  • High School Diploma- Required   
  • Proficient use of the Microsoft Suite- Required 

Skills 

  • Ability to learn a new computer program within 30 days of introduction  
  • Ability to proficiently use a phone system that spans multiple facilities- including answering, transferring, putting calls on hold, etc. Within 15 days of introduction.  
  • Ability to respectfully interact with guests and volunteers no matter their background, temperament, preferences, or life choices 
  • Detail oriented, organized, thorough, and possessing the ability to multitask well 
  • Ability to constantly assess the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of all work assignments 

Foundation of Faith 

  • Be ready at all times to give an answer of the Hope that lies within the committed follower of Christ, as outlined in the Christian Bible, with gentleness and respect (1 Peter 3:15).  
  • Live everyday life in submission to the authority of the Christian Bible (2 Timothy 3:15-17). 
  • Commit to continual training under those called to teach the doctrines of the faith and the Word of God, as well as to seek out fellowship with other believers (Hebrews 10:24-25), as evidenced by being a member in good standing in a local evangelical church. 

 

Environment 

The Shelter Coordinator will need to be able to consistently work in a noisy and distraction-filled environment. The coordinator’s task will occasionally require them to work in low temperatures, high temperatures, outdoor elements (e.g. rain, wind, snow), and small/enclosed spaces. 

 

Physical Requirements-  

The below listed abilities are required to be able to complete the essential duties of the role: 

The Shelter Coordinator will need to be able to constantly navigate stairs- quickly and proficiently navigating up to 3 flights of stairs whenever needed. They will constantly need to be able to lift 25lbs in all directions and will occasionally need to lift 50+lbs in all directions. They will need to be able to complete 1-2 hours of physically taxing work without a break and stand or walk for 3+hours without sitting down. They will occasionally need to complete 3+ hours of physically taxing work without a break and be able to move with haste/light jog for 500ft. 

 

The Shelter Coordinator will need to be able to constantly complete visual scans of indoor/outdoor areas in varying levels of light. They will need to occasionally complete tasks with repetitive motions that include the wrists, hands and/or fingers. They will need to be able to constantly communicate clearly with others to exchange information.
