Organist–Pianist and/or Director of Music (Part-Time)

Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ—an open and affirming congregation where no matter who you are or where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here—is seeking a Organist–Pianist and/or a Music Director to lead and grow our vibrant music ministry.
These part-time positions offer an opportunity to shape meaningful and engaging worship through music, working collaboratively with the Pastor, staff, and congregation. These positions can be combined.
Organist/Accompanist to provide music throughout the year for Sunday worship services, special services, and choir rehearsals. This position can be year-round or from September to June with summer Sundays paid separately.
Director of Music to oversee the music program and provide leadership for all choir performances. This position runs from September through June when the choir is in session.
Skills (for Combined position)
- Demonstrated expertise in playing the organ and piano, with a strong understanding of diverse musical styles suitable for worship settings.
- Strong organizational abilities to manage rehearsal schedules, instrument maintenance, and event planning.
- Proven conducting experience and leadership skills to guide and motivate volunteer musicians and choir members.
- Excellent communication skills to collaborate effectively with clergy, staff, volunteers, and congregation members.
- Experience in teaching or mentoring musicians of varying skill levels to foster growth and confidence.
- Ability to adapt musically to different liturgical seasons, special occasions, or community needs. Schedule & Compensation
- Part-time (approximately 12-15 hours per week), year-round position (July 1–June 30) [Could be 9 months with summers off]
- Weekly commitments include:
- Sunday morning rehearsal (8:30–9:15 a.m.)
- Sunday worship (9:30 - 10:30 a.m.)
- Thursday evening rehearsal (6:30–8:00 p.m.)
- keyboard rehearsal time as needed
- Additional services during Advent, Christmas Eve, Lent, Holy Week, and Easter
- Salary commensurate with experience (biweekly, non-benefited)
Qualifications
Required:
- Degree in music or equivalent experience
- Choral conducting experience
- Proficiency in both organ and piano, including strong sight-reading skills
- Ability to lead congregational singing with confidence and creativity
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
Preferred:
- Experience in church music leadership
- Familiarity and interested in a variety of musical styles and improvisation
