Job Description Summary: Family Ministry Director
The Family Ministry Director oversees the spiritual development of children and youth (birth through 12th grade). In a small church setting, this role is highly relational. This position is responsible for overseeing Sunday School, offering youth and family events, recruiting and supporting volunteers, and empowering parents to be the primary spiritual leaders in their homes.
Core Responsibilities
Family Discipleship & Parent Engagement
- Partner with parents, providing them with resources, encouragement, and tools to disciple their children at home.
- Communicate regularly with families (e.g., weekly emails, social media, and parent meetings) about upcoming events and curriculum.
- Build a church culture where families worship and serve together.
Volunteer Recruitment & Leadership
- Recruit, train, and schedule volunteer teachers, small group leaders, and nursery attendants.
- Provide continuous encouragement, feedback, and appreciation for the volunteer team.
- Ensure all ministry environments comply with church child-protection and safety policies (e.g., background checks, volunteer-to-child ratios).
Program Oversight & Teaching
- Oversee Sunday morning programming (e.g., nursery, children’s church, or Sunday school).
- Lead, coordinate, or oversee youth gatherings (middle and high school).
- Plan special seasonal events such as Vacation Bible School (VBS), youth retreats, service projects, and holiday programs.
- Create and implement serving and mission experiences/opportunities for children, youth and their families.
- Develop new ministries and programs to reach out to community families.
- Select or develop engaging, biblically sound curriculum for all age groups
· Develop a comprehensive ministry plan that involves seasonal events, retreats, service opportunities, and
mission opportunities for students and their families.
· Provide hospitality throughout the family ministry, welcoming new and returning families on Sunday
mornings and special events. Acclimate new families to OCC.
Church Integration
- Act as church liaison connecting and partnering with LifeWise leadership. Seek ways to invite the kids/families to OCC Activities.
- Participate as a collaborative member of the broader church staff team.
- Help children and youth transition smoothly into the adult life and worship services of the church.
- Integrate the kids and youth into regular patterns of church life, worship, serve, tithe.
- Manage the designated family ministry budget and resource allocations effectively.
Qualifications
- Spiritual Leadership: A growing, personal relationship with Jesus Christ and alignment with the church's core beliefs, and willingness to set the example in the regular practice of personal prayer and Bible study.
· Experience: 1–3 years of experience in children, youth, or family ministry leadership (paid or extensive
volunteer). Experience building/leading teams of volunteers.
- Relational Skills: Strong emotional intelligence, with the ability to easily connect with children, students, and adults of all ages.
- Organization: Self-starter with the ability to plan ahead and juggle multiple projects at once.
· Bachelor’s Degree preferred: With coursework in theology/religion a plus.
