Pastor of Disciple-Making and Care

The Pastor of Disciple-Making and Care leads the church’s discipleship, small groups, missions, and pastoral care ministries to help people live restored through the gospel to be and to multiply disciples of Jesus. He equips leaders, teaches the Scriptures, mobilizes believers for mission, and fosters biblical community through meaningful discipleship and care. He provides pastoral counseling and shepherding, coordinates care with staff and deacons, and leads the church’s discipleship pathways and small group life.

Principal Function 

The Pastor of Disciple-Making and Care provides oversight, leadership, teaching, equipping, and service in the areas of small groups, discipleship, missions, counseling, and care. 

Position Description 

The Pastor of Disciple-Making and Care leads the church’s discipleship, small groups, missions,  and pastoral care ministries to help people live restored through the gospel to be and to multiply disciples of Jesus. He equips leaders, teaches the Scriptures, mobilizes believers for mission, and fosters biblical community through meaningful discipleship and care. He provides pastoral counseling and shepherding, coordinates care with staff and deacons, and leads the church’s discipleship pathways and small group life. 

Role Responsibilities 

• Responsible for planning, leading, and overseeing the disciple-making and care strategy and work at Calvary Baptist Church. 

• Oversee the development of the work and annual budget for areas of responsibility and manage spending accordingly. 

• Serve in leadership roles at church-wide events and ministry initiatives. 

• Ensure all disciple-making efforts and church ministry plans intentionally cultivate lives  that are scriptural, relational, worshipful, and missional. 

• Articulate vision and establish direction, goals, and priorities for discipleship, groups, missions, and pastoral care aligned with the church’s mission: to lead image bearers to live restored through the gospel to be and multiply disciples of Jesus.

• Supervises multiple staff members within the NextGen and International Ministry staff. 

Supervision entails mentorship, coordination and collaboration in advancing the mission, annual evaluation and review, PTO approval, and personnel policy enforcement.

Small Groups / Community Groups 

• Oversee, coordinate, and strengthen all Connection Groups and Bible study environments. 

• Evaluate teaching materials and strategic plans for Bible studies, groups, and efforts. 

• Guide in the selection, enlistment, training, and encouragement of group leaders. 

• Direct and promote meetings to train and prepare group leaders. 

• Lead groups to bear marks of disciples: Scriptural, relational, missional, and worshipful.

Discipleship & Equipping 

• Develop and implement intentional discipleship environments (classes, cohorts, 

mentoring).

• Equip members to study Scripture, treasure Christ, and live in obedience in all of life. 

• Train members to share the gospel and disciple others toward multiplication. 

• Build leadership pipelines that reproduce leaders who embody Scriptural, Relational, Worshipful, and Missional living. 

Pastoral Care & Counseling 

• Oversee pastoral care systems including hospital visitation, crisis care, and member follow-up in coordination with or oversight of the deacon body.

• Provide counseling (marriage, grief, spiritual care, etc.) as needed. 

• Perform funerals, weddings, and other pastoral duties as appropriate. 

• Equip leaders to provide frontline care within group life. 

• Ensure care ministry reflects the gospel by fostering relational connection, spiritual encouragement, and worshipful trust in Christ during seasons of need. 

Required Theological Convictions 

• Confess Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. 

• Professed faith in Jesus publicly through baptism by immersion. 

• Affirm the Baptist Faith and Message 2000. 

• Support the mission, values, and doctrinal beliefs of Calvary Baptist Church.

Required Qualifications 

• A call of God to vocational Christian ministry. 

• Meets the qualifications of a pastor/elder/overseer as outlined in 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1. 

• Ordained to the gospel ministry or willing to complete ordination process and be ordained by Calvary Baptist Church. 

• A bachelor’s degree in biblical studies, ministry, or related field. 

• Philosophical alignment with the church leadership. 

• Five years of vocational ministry experience in a local church setting 

• Able to work well with a team, submit to authority, and lead others.

• Relates and communicates well with others both in verbal and written forms. 

• Competent to steward resources and manage budget. 

• A coachable and teachable attitude and continual learner. 

• Capable of completing the requirements of the position. 

Preferred Qualifications 

• A Master of Divinity from a seminary or theology school of similar faith and practice

• Ministry experience in a church of similar size
