Job Description

The Director of Christian Education

Leads and coordinates the comprehensive educational ministry of King Moravian Church. This full-time position develops and implements progressive programming across all age groups while fostering spiritual growth, community engagement, and discipleship. The Director works collaboratively with church staff, volunteers, and paid childcare workers to create a loving, inclusive, and safe environment for the entire congregation.


Key Responsibilities


Ministry Leadership & Programming

• Develop and implement comprehensive Christian education and discipleship programs for children, youth, and adults under pastoral guidance

• Lead Sunday School, children's church, youth group meetings, and Senior Friends programming with age-appropriate curriculum • Coordinate confirmation programs in partnership with families and congregation

• Design intergenerational experiences that connect all ages through shared learning, mentoring, and service

• Organize seasonal programming throughout the church year (VBS, mission trips, holiday events)

• Incorporate interactive, experiential activities and technology to engage diverse learning styles

• Provide or coordinate Children's Message during worship services

• Encourage children and youth participation in Sunday worship


Community & Family Engagement

• Build supportive relationships with parents and families in conjunction with pastoral care

• Develop family-friendly events that encourage Christian values and family traditions

• Create community-oriented outreach opportunities that extend the church's reach beyond the congregation


Operations & Team Management

• Recruit, train, and supervise volunteer and paid childcare staff with clear expectations and ongoing support • Coordinate childcare coverage for worship services and special events with the Christian Education Committee

• Manage program logistics, classroom setup, and procurement of educational supplies

• Implement and maintain Safe Sanctuary policies ensuring compliance with all child safety laws, background checks, and mandated reporter training

• Develop detailed implementation plans with measurable outcomes

• Collaborate with Pastor, church leadership, committees, and volunteers to align programming with the congregation's mission and vision


Provincial Responsibilities

As a DCE within the Moravian Church Southern Province, participate in denominational activities including:

• Teacher training events and monthly DCE meetings

• Provincial programs, camps, and Board of Cooperative Ministries initiatives

• One week of service in the provincial camping ministry at Laurel Ridge

• Promotion of Laurel Ridge events and Synod programs


Qualifications


Education & Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Christian Education, Theology, Ministry, or related field with a minimum of 3 years working with children. Seminary or early childhood education background preferred.

Terms of Employment

• Position Type: Full-time, salaried, 40 hours per week (weekend programs and Sunday worship services)

• Employer: Southern Province of the Moravian Church through King Moravian Church

• Supervision: Reports to Pastor in cooperation with Christian Education Committee and Joint Board


Salary & Benefits

• Minimum Annual Salary: $40,000

• Continuing Education Allowance

• Vacation (based on years in active ministry): 5 days (6 months-1 year), 10 days (2-5 years), 15 days (6-10 years), 20 days (10+ years)

• Continuing Education/Professional Development: 5 days annually

• Sick Leave: 5 days annually for personal or immediate family illness

• Family Leave: Up to 12 weeks (first 3 weeks paid)

• Annual review conducted by Personnel Committee with Pastor
