Job Title: St. John’s Ross Youth Minister

Reports To: The Rev. Heather Erickson, Associate Priest Hours: 6–10 Hours Per Week Target Audience: Middle and High School Students Start Date: ASAP Rate: $40-$50 per hour DOE

Position Overview

We are seeking an enthusiastic and reliable individual to lead our youth ministry. This position is located in Ross, CA (Marin County) and focuses on providing spiritual leadership and a welcoming community for students during their transitional middle and high school years. The ideal candidate will be present, prepared, and engaged on Sunday mornings, while maintaining consistent communication with families throughout the week.

Core Responsibilities

1. Sunday Morning Leadership (Weekly)

  • Schedule: Every Sunday from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM.
  • Duties: Lead the youth gathering during this block. This includes arriving early to set up, attending 9:00 am intergenerational service, delivering an engaging and age-appropriate lesson/discussion, facilitating community building, and cleaning up post-service.
  • Create a safe, welcoming environment where students feel heard and valued.

2. Quarterly Youth Engagement (Seasonal)

  • Schedule: One evening per quarter (date to be coordinated with Rev. Heather).
  • Duties: Plan and execute a social or service-oriented event to foster deeper community among the students outside of Sunday mornings (e.g., game night, service project, pizza party).

3. Communication & Administration (Flexible Weekday Hours)

  • Weekly Communication: Maintain contact with students and parents throughout the week as needed via email, text, or social media to keep them informed of upcoming topics and events.
  • Collaboration: Coordinate regularly with The Rev. Heather Erickson regarding curriculum, student needs, and upcoming church-wide events.
  • Preparation: Use designated weekday hours to prepare lessons and materials for the upcoming Sunday.

Education

  • Degree: A Bachelor’s degree in Theology, Ministry, Biblical Studies, or a related spiritual field is preferred.
  • Experience Substitution: We value spiritual maturity and practical wisdom. Equivalent experience—such as seminary training, certificate programs in spiritual direction, or significant service in youth ministry—will be happily considered in lieu of a traditional degree.

Qualifications

  • Experience: Proven experience working with middle and high school-aged youth (teaching, camp counseling, mentoring, etc.).
  • Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively engage with both students and parents.
  • Faith: A commitment to the Christian faith and the ability to articulate it in a way that resonates with pre-teens/teens.
  • Reliability: Punctuality and consistency are essential for this role.
  • Clearance: Must pass all required background checks and complete Safe Church/Child Protection training.

Schedule Breakdown (Estimated)

  • Sundays: 3 hours (Fixed: 9am–12pm)
  • Weekdays: 3–7 hours (Flexible: Prep time, emails, planning)
  • Total: 6–10 hours/week
