Job Description

We, the Southminster Presbyterian Church of Arlington Heights, IL have begun a search for a Lead Pastor who will shepherd us into the next phase of our ministry inspired by our vision of being an oasis of hope, healing and renewal. Towards that end, we seek a wise leader to guide us into a new chapter of life and love; one characterized by effective ministry to one another and our community. We envision this leadership complemented by relevant preaching, engaging worship, unifying management of teams, and timely pastoral care.


Personal Qualifications—The Lead Pastor will:

  1. Be able to give testimony to his/her love for the Lord and his/her call to pastoral ministry.
  2. Desire to live out his/her faith and employ his/her gifts as the Spirit leads.
  3. Love people (both seekers and disciples) and be able to create and sustain positive relationships with them.
  4. Be persistent and resilient while pursuing the realization of the vision of the church.
  5. Be technically adept with digital communication tools.


Professional Competencies: The Lead Pastor will be gifted as:

  1. A communicator: able to craft and deliver biblical and relevant sermons that effectively speak to all people on their journeys of faith.
  2. An organizational leader with experience developing and implementing strategic initiatives while guiding the Council (Session), ministry teams, staff, and congregation into a new season of ministry.
  3. A collaborative team builder who sees the strengths of our church and is able to move us forward with a unified sense of purpose.
  4. A pastor whose care for the spiritual well-being of the congregation is characterized by love and humility while being strengthened by discernment and prayer. 


Primary Responsibilities:

  1. Preaching—the Lead Pastor is responsible for the preaching and will do so in a manner that is engaging, relevant and biblical.
  2. Worship—the Lead Pastor is responsible for planning,in consultation with the Worship team, and orchestrating motivational worship services.
  3. Leadership—the Lead Pastor will serve as the spiritual and organizational leader of the congregation leading the congregation and Council towards a unified vision of the church with strategic initiatives that take the best of Southminster and make it better and more inviting to others.
  4. Pastoral Care—the Lead Pastor will assure timely pastoral care and counseling for those seeking baptism, confirmation, marriage, healing, encouragement, and spiritual direction.
  5. Public Presence—the Lead Pastor will represent the congregation in the community and denomination.


Expectations – The Lead Pastor will:

  1. Be ordained as pastor by the Presbyterian Church U.S.A or by one of its ecclesiastical partners (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the Reformed Church in America, and the United Church of Christ).
  2. Keep consistent office hours and support congregational events by his/her presence.
  3. Work with Council and the lay leaders to move Southminster towards a unified vision and mission for SPCAH.
  4. Exhibit a strong desire to live in the community.

The congregation recognizes that it is an aging congregation with diminishing resources. They are a congregation that needs help developing and implementing strategies to grow numerically and grow younger as a congregation. Towards that end, they seek a wise leader to guide the congregation into a new chapter of life and ministry, one characterized by effective ministry to one another and their community.
