Job Overview

The Spiritual Formation Pastor (SFP) will guide and equip the GBC network to become spiritually mature disciples who connect with others for the life-changing pursuit of Jesus. He will serve as a lead pastoral team member under the direction and leadership of the Executive Pastor, working to develop and grow ministries designed to help people of all ages take their next step with Jesus at Grace Bible Church. This will require a firm grasp of the beliefs, values, and strategy of Grace Bible Church and the ability to align staff and key leadership teams with its mission, vision, and values. This will be done in partnership with the pastors, elders, and staff to innovate and develop our spiritual formation ministries to be scalable and sustainable for our growing church network. This individual will also be part of the preaching rotation for all campuses in the GBC Network. 


This role will comprise of: 

50% Leadership of Staff and Volunteer Teams  

35% Groups Strategy 

15% Family Discipleship Strategy 

 

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES 

Leadership of Staff and Volunteer Teams: Success in this role will be best accomplished by prioritizing an investment in staff and ministry leaders who, in turn, develop the people in their ministry areas to become spiritually mature disciples who connect with others for the life-changing pursuit of Jesus. The SFP is responsible for creating an environment that attracts, develops, and empowers the leaders providing spiritual formation programming to all children, students, and adults by:  


  • Participating in all levels of Leadershift, including developing teams to perform various functions and identifying and developing team leaders, coaches, and/or coordinators for the core spiritual formation ministries at GBC (children, students, discipleship/small groups, local/global missions).
  • Communicating a clear vision and defined ministry wins for staff and volunteer teams regularly. 
  • Championing the leadership development strategy of the Spiritual Formation ministries. 
  • Providing centralized efforts for training leaders (retreats, tools, continuing education opportunities, etc.) 
  • Providing staff and volunteer teams with current best practices (discipleship, groups, evangelism, and missions). 
  • Providing regular evaluations, feedback, and systematic improvements for team members. 
  • Developing, submitting, and managing budget forecasts and expenses for team leaders. 
  • Identifying, recruiting, and interviewing potential staff and volunteer team members. 
  • Providing intentional opportunities to show appreciation to volunteers and staff. 
  • As part of the staff leadership team, participate in developing, tracking, and evaluating annual ministry goals that align with the GBC mission, vision, and network priorities.  
  • Teach periodically at weekend services on any campus within the GBC Network. 
  • Perform other pastoral tasks as needed, including weddings, funerals, hospital visits, and other pastoral care. 


 Oversight and Execution of Groups Strategy: Constructs practical onramps and systems to help people move from visiting to connecting and growing in groups to multiplying disciples: 

  • Developing a systematic and effective effort to generate interest in small groups (sign-up areas, brochures, stories, all-church promotions, webpage, etc).
  • Overseeing information and tracking of small group participants and leaders. 
  • Recruit, train, and equip current and future group leaders and oversee curriculum selection. 
  • Recruit, develop, train, and support teams that assist people in taking their NEXT step (group participation, serving, giving, being on mission).  
  • Oversee, implement, and maintain our healthy, growing discipleship process while further developing systems that move people through it and allow for tracking each individual’s progress toward an increased intensity and depth of engagement in ministry. 
  • Directly oversee adult discipleship groups, assimilation groups, and Grace groups, including identifying, developing, and equipping leaders for these groups. 
  • Increase the percentage of attendees actively participating in small groups. 
  • Work with pastors, staff, and leaders to implement a comprehensive plan and process that will multiply groups. 
  • Oversee care ministries through the group’s strategy. 
  • Facilitate ongoing training and equipping to encourage active involvement in spiritual formation and evangelism within, outside, and through the GBC group strategy. 


Oversight and Execution of Family Discipleship Strategy: Designs practical onramps and systems to help families move from visiting to belonging and growing by: 

  • Provide leadership to Student and Family Ministry staff, ensuring cohesive discipleship and group strategy from cradle through college. 

 

GRACE STAFF EXPECTATIONS 

  • Attend regular staff meetings as scheduled. 
  • Attend staff leadership team meetings as scheduled. 
  • Meet weekly with the Executive Pastor. 
  • Meet regularly with the Spiritual Formation ministry staff (children’s director, worship director, student pastor, counselor). 
  • Maintain an active relationship with Jesus Christ sustained through the practice of personal spiritual disciplines. 
  • Embody Christlikeness and lead with humility, character, and love. 
  • Demonstrate commitment to unity and a willingness to work in a collaborative team environment. 
  • Be personally engaged with GBC’s mission, vision, and strategy. 
  • Support GBC’s beliefs, core values, and practices as outlined in the Doctrinal Statement. 
  • Maintain annual Ministry Partner agreement. 
  • Remain up to date on all activities and ministries going on at all GBC campuses to be able to disseminate information as needed. 


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Bachelor’s degree in biblical studies, theology, or other related area. Master’s or higher preferred.  
  • Experience leading multiple staff and volunteers in a ministry context. 
  • Experience working with small groups is preferred.
