TITLEDirector of Youth and Christian Education

Tasks, Expectations, Duties, Supervision, Assignments, & Responsibilities for the Position

The Director of Youth and Christian Education (“Director”) will report to the Senior Pastor and Head of Staff (“Senior Pastor”).

The Director will possess a Master of Divinity from a theological seminary and be ordained or seeking ordination in the PCUSA church.

The broad areas of responsibility of the Director will be (1) Youth Ministry and (2) Christian Education. More specifically, the expectations and duties of the Director under these two areas of responsibility will include:

Youth Ministry

The Director will, under the supervision of the Senior Pastor:

·        Develop programs to engage children, youth, families, and young adults in a community of faith, inclusion, and mission.

·        Implement ministries to engage youth within our congregation and the broader community.

·        Promote the church and its programming in the greater Mountain Brook, AL community to increase awareness and participation.

·        Guide the senior high school and junior high school youth (children from 6th to 12th grades) in relevant non-Sunday weekly youth meetings and mission work.

·        Assist Office Administrator with maintaining a robust social media presence for the church.

·        Create and manage an annual calendar of youth group activities in addition to weekly youth meetings.

o  E.g., Birmingham Barons Games, hiking trips, theme park trips, etc.

·        With adult volunteers, organize annual, short-term youth mission trip, including all fundraising and trip details.

·        Organize annual Youth Sunday.

·        Mentor senior high youth for leadership opportunities in the church.

·        Support ministries that focus on the needs of parents with young families.

·        Provide pastoral care and counseling to youth and their families.

·        Be a part of the community (e.g., attend sports events, plays, band competitions, etc.).

·        To the extent a youth internship program is developed, manage and supervise youth ministry interns.

·        Prepare and manage the youth ministry budget.

Christian Education

The Director, under the supervision of the Senior Pastor and in collaboration with the Christian Education (CE) Committee, will provide leadership and organizational guidance to all Christian Education areas, which include:

·        Plan, organize, and manage childcare for infants and young children on Sundays and other days when parents will be participating in church programs.

·        Plan and lead the Children’s Moment during the weekly Sunday worship service.

·        Schedule and collaborate with adult volunteers to lead children’s (Pre-School – 6th grade) Sunday School programs.

·        Plan topics, occasionally lead, and schedule volunteers to lead Adult Sunday School.

·        Facilitate the organization of weekly Bible studies.

·        Lead Confirmation Classes, as needed.

·        Partner with the Director of Music to engage youth in music programs.

·        Collaborate with the Senior Pastor and the Congregational Care Committee to establish quarterly church and community-wide prayer events.

·        Assist the CE Committee with preparing and managing the CE Committee budget.

In addition to the expectations, duties, and responsibilities for Youth Ministry and Christian Education listed above, the Director will also:

·        Take active leadership in worship, including preaching approximately once a month.

·        Participate in weekly staff meetings and keep staff up to date on all youth and Christian education activities.

·        Participate in Presbytery activities.

·        Attend monthly Session meetings as requested by the Senior Pastor.

·        Establish and nurture a strong relationship with the MPBC Preschool (“Preschool”) staff and parents, which includes hosting a bi-weekly chapel service for the Preschool students and serving on the Preschool board.

1.       The Director will help the congregation, staff, and volunteers achieve our ministry goals by:

·        Establishing Relationships with church members, MBPC committee chairs, MBPC staff, MBPC Preschool staff, and the community that are encouraging, supportive, genuine, and engaging to engender trust and respect. 

·        Connecting, Integrating, and Synergizing people, programming, and involvement opportunities by leveraging solid relationships to connect children, youth, and families with other families. Additionally, the Director will connect the youth to our elderly members through thoughtful and creative activities designed specifically for those two groups. Creating this synergy supports spiritual development and integrates all church congregation members into all aspects of church life so that our congregation will share their faith together through meaningful, lasting relationships.

·        Employing Organizational and Leadership Skills to ensure clarity of responsibilities, strategic use of resources, programming preparation, and coordination of volunteers. Inventive, well-planned involvement opportunities will attract member participation and lead to joyful service. Appealing to families through innovative programming may draw in new members and serve as outreach. Staff will find fulfillment and contribute more effectively when led with intention and respect.

·        Leading Impactful Youth Programs and Preaching Strong Sermons that are both scripturally and theologically sound, spiritually challenging, thought-provoking, inspiring, and enlivening. Preaching and teaching are core components of spreading the Gospel, and they will always remain the primary mission of our Church.


 

2.       The Director should possess the following skills, gifts and training to lead the congregation towards its established vision and mission.

·        Spiritually Mature and Inspiring Preacher who speaks to a wide range of people through dynamic, relatable sermons/teaching. A Christ-centered leader who is authentic in that they acknowledge their faults and mistakes but aim to learn from them and whose authenticity is lived out in everyday interactions. A person who values involving children and youth in Sunday Worship and designs such opportunities with imagination and purpose.

·        Passionate, Relationship-Driven Leader who will see the church’s current growth momentum while maintaining those traditions that make up the gospel fabric of our church. A relatable person who enjoys people and building meaningful relationships. Someone creative and energetic in motivating congregational involvement and investment. One who understands the numerous ministries within MBPC and thoughtfully connects our children and youth to those ministries. Someone who brings an enthusiasm to connecting congregants with each other.

·        Action-Oriented Person with a Strong Work Ethic who is eager to work on a collaborative team to build ministry and fellowship opportunities for our children, youth, and families. One who flourishes in a “non-handholding” environment by proactively initiating solutions, owning responsibilities, and empowering others. Someone who promotes teamwork in volunteers and persistently inspires people to get involved.

·        Confident and Secure Individual who actively listens, solicits feedback, willingly tries new things and displays flexibility to alter their approach as appropriate. Someone who is self-aware, has a good sense of humor, and can navigate sensitive situations with grace and composure. A person who is light-hearted, patient, compassionate, and honest with self and others. A person who appreciates manners and understands the balance between organizational deference and sharing their thoughts on important issues. A person who respectfully shares concerns in an appropriate forum while also proposing well-formulated solutions related to their concerns.
