Job Description

Youth Minister Position Summary: 

 

The Youth Minister is responsible for shepherding, discipling, and leading all ministry for junior high and high school students. The Youth Minister’s role supports the overall spiritual health of First Church by focusing on building up our next generation of Christ followers. The Youth Minister will relate to, connect, teach, mentor, and disciple our students. They will recruit, equip, and lead volunteers, coordinate special events and trips, and live according to Christ’s example.  

 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:  

 

Spiritual Leadership 

  • Grow in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ through obedience to God’s Word and sensitivity to the Holy Spirit. 
  • Must embrace the First Church Faith Statement. 
  • Engage and connect with students personally through one-on-one conversations, hosting small groups, and attending events including, but not limited to : sporting/other extracurricular events, community events, etc. 
  • Recruit, train, and equip group leaders who are spiritually mature and personable to serve, mentor, and lead students in small group discussion.  
  • Equip, collaborate and connect with parents to support the overall spiritual development of their children.  
  • Engage in meaningful discussions with parents and students from a Biblical perspective regarding life/social issues. 
  • Provide pastoral care, counseling, and guidance to youth and their families.  
  • Communicate the Scriptures in a clear and relevant manner.   
  • Clearly and articulately teach the essential doctrines of the Christian Faith and the First Church Statement of Faith. 
  • Develop sermon series and small group questions that are faithful to the Scriptures and relevant for everyday lives of students. 
  • Discern, evaluate, and address the spiritual needs of our youth and families through biblical teaching and intentional discipleship.  

 

Administration 

  • Plan, schedule and coordinate all youth events including, but not limited to: youth services, community and outreach events, confirmation, fall festival, and any other youth related activities. Some events require dozens of volunteers and need to be planned months in advance. 
  • Schedule, equip, and monitor all volunteers that represent our youth ministry. 
  • Plan and coordinate mission trips in and outside our local area.  
  • Build relationships with local schools and community organizations for outreach ministry opportunities.  
  • Plan and coordinate church-wide events with the Pastoral staff of First Church.  
  • Meet bi-weekly with the Executive Pastor to plan the calendar, track goals, and identify potential areas of improvement.  
  • Use social media and other platforms to engage with the youth and community.  
  • Build and maintain a comprehensive list of students and parents participating in youth ministry for clear and effective communication. 
  • Use Microsoft Office proficiently.  
  • Work with Executive Pastor and relevant church leadership to ensure adequate safety measures and practices are understood and properly executed by all volunteers and staff in all activities or services involving Youth. 
  • Attend all First Church staff meetings and meet with the Executive bi-weekly to review calendar, track goals, and identify potential areas of improvement. 
  • Work with the Executive Pastor to develop an annual worship budget and work within that budget. 

 

 

Qualifications:  

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in theology or biblical studies preferred.  
  • 5 years of experience teaching or leading students.  
  • 5 years leading a youth group of 50+ students preferred.  
  • Excellent communication and public speaking skills.  
  • Excellent communicator with both students and parents.  
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a team.  
  • Ability to multi-task and work well under pressure.
