Job Description

At Soma, we believe worship is about encounter and formation — encounter with God and continued formation into people who are practicing the Way of Jesus together for the life of the world.

The Director of Worship Arts & Communication builds, leads, and directs the full worship arts ecosystem of Soma Midtown. This role provides visionary leadership for musical worship, audiovisual ministry, creative production, visual arts, and digital communications — curating environments that form our people spiritually and tell the story of what God is doing among us.

This leader shapes not only what happens on Sundays, but the creative language of our church throughout the week and throughout the building.

Core Areas of Leadership

1. Worship Vision & Culture

  • Build and steward a worship culture marked by authenticity, theological depth, and responsiveness to the Holy Spirit.
  • Lead the strategic direction of worship arts in alignment with Soma’s mission and vision.
  • Integrate ancient liturgical rhythms with fresh and creative expressions of encounter.
  • Foster relational trust, humility, excellence, and spiritual maturity across teams.
  • Create healthy systems, structures, and developmental pathways for volunteers and leaders.

2. Worship Direction & Sunday Execution

  • Direct all musical, liturgical, and audiovisual elements of Sunday Gatherings and key church events.
  • Lead worship regularly while raising up and training additional leaders.
  • Oversee scheduling, rehearsal rhythms, song library management, and production planning.
  • Ensure excellence in musicianship, theological integrity, and technical clarity.
  • Develop annual ministry goals and budgets aligned with Soma’s capacity and calling.

3. Worship Arts Curation

  • Build and direct a Worship Arts Ministry that includes visual arts, spatial design, and environmental storytelling.
  • Curate art installations throughout the building that reflect liturgical seasons, sermon series, and theological themes.
  • Shape the aesthetic and sensory environment of our spaces to cultivate formative worship experiences.

4. AV & Production Ministry Leadership

  • Lead and develop a thriving Audio/Visual ministry.
  • Oversee all sound, lighting, broadcast, and video systems.
  • Recruit, train, and coach AV team members in technical excellence and spiritual formation.
  • Maintain and improve AVL infrastructure (audio consoles, video switchers, routing systems, etc.).
  • Ensure broadcast/stream quality for digital gatherings.

5. Creative Production & Video Direction

  • Direct the creation of video content for worship services, storytelling, testimonies, teaching series, and special initiatives.
  • Oversee filming, editing, and post-production workflows.
  • Provide creative direction for visual branding across series and seasons.
  • Develop storytelling strategies that amplify what God is doing in and through Soma.

6. Digital Communications & Media Strategy

  • Manage and direct all digital communications for the church.
  • Oversee social media platforms and content strategy.
  • Ensure alignment between worship themes, sermon calendar, and digital storytelling.
  • Build systems for a consistent, mission-aligned online presence.
  • Develop communication rhythms that serve both formation and outreach.

7. Worship Team Formation

  • Provide pastoral care for worship and AV team members.
  • Develop leaders musically, spiritually, and relationally.
  • Lead recruitment, onboarding, and evaluation processes.

8. Director’s Team Involvement

  • Attend and contribute to weekly staff meetings.
  • Collaborate with the Directors Team to align worship arts, preaching calendar, liturgical seasons, and church-wide initiatives.
  • Contribute to the overall shaping of Soma Midtown’s culture, identity, and spiritual formation practices.

  • Demonstrate both craft excellence and deep spiritual formation.
  • Possess strong leadership development skills.

About the Soma Midtown

Soma Midtown Distinctives:

We are a church that is intentionally architected around spiritual formation and practicing the way of Jesus. We have designed a community rule of life and discipleship pathway aimed at helping people learn to follow Jesus and through the power of the Holy Spirit be formed into mature disciples of Christlike love.

We are a neighborhood church that prioritizes relational presence over consumeristic platforms, programs, and power. We believe the church is a spiritual family, and so we have curated a rich ecosystem of community - Sunday gatherings, missional communities, discipleship groups, dinner tables - so that people can learn to share life together with Jesus.

We are a missional church seeking the holistic flourishing of Indianapolis. We strive to be a faithful presence that bears witness to God’s kingdom in the city with the courage and compassionate love of Jesus.

We seek to become God's beloved multicultural family by bridging historic racial, cultural, economic, generational, and political barriers through spiritual practices like justice, mercy, and reconciliation.

We are a church planting church with a passion for incubating and multiplying new congregations in our city and beyond.

We teach the Scriptures with the goal of whole-life integration. Our teaching is biblical, thoughtful, interdisciplinary, historically rooted, culturally responsive, and formation oriented.

We are a theologically diverse nondenominational community rooted in Christian orthodoxy as articulated in the ancient creeds while also synthesizing several other streams in the Great Tradition: Reformed, charismatic, baptistic, contemplative, social justice, liturgical, complementarian (male elders with women leaders + preachers), and a commitment to a historic sexual ethic.
