Overview

At Soma, we believe worship is about encounter and formation – encounter with God and continued formation into people who are practicing the Way of Jesus together for the life of the world. Through song, liturgy and prayer, worship reorients our attention and affection back towards Jesus, what He’s doing, and who we’re becoming in Him, inviting us to respond to Him in kind. The Director of Worship provides leadership, implements strategy, and champions culture for worship at Soma Midtown. This includes shepherding the worship team, overseeing and executing Sunday Gatherings, and ensuring ongoing alignment between our worship culture and our vision and mission.


Primary Responsibilities:


Worship Vision & Culture

  • Foster a worship culture that models authentic encounter with God and embodied response to the Holy Spirit.
  • Build relationships of trust, safety, and integrity across the team and congregation.
  • Lead (both on- and off-stage) with humility, confidence, and clarity.
  • Engage both familiar and diverse expressions of worship reflective of who we are and who we are becoming.
  • Draw from the deep well of the ancient liturgical tradition and fresh, creative ways of encountering God through worship.
  • Create healthy structures, policies, and rhythms that help volunteers and leaders thrive.


Worship Direction & Execution

  • Oversee music, liturgy, and audiovisual production for Sunday Gatherings and key events.
  • Lead worship regularly and train others to lead well.
  • Ensure quality musicianship and technical clarity.
  • Oversee scheduling, rehearsals, and preparation of music and AV teams.
  • Guide the curation and creation of liturgy and sacrament rhythms.
  • Manage song library, scheduling rhythms, and technical resources
  • Develop and implement annual goals and budgets that align with Soma's vision and capacity.


Worship Team Formation

  • Provide pastoral care for worship team (music and AV) members.
  • Develop worship leaders and volunteers in their musical, theological, and relational growth.
  • Lead the process of recruiting, vetting, and onboarding new team members.
  • Provide ongoing coaching, feedback, and support.
  • Cultivate a healthy team culture and facilitate conflict resolution when needed.


Director’s Team Involvement

  • Attend and contribute to weekly staff meetings helping to shape the culture and practices of Soma Midtown.
  • Collaborate with the Directors Team to ensure alignment between worship, liturgical calendar, preaching calendar.


Role Qualifications

The Director of Worship must:

  • Be a follower of Jesus in essential agreement with Soma Midtown’s statement of faith.
  • Be (or become) a covenant member at Soma Midtown.
  • Meet the character qualifications for deacons (1 Timothy 3, Soma's Deacon White Paper).
  • Demonstrate stewardship of craft (proficiency in leading worship, leadership development, technical skill) and character (a deeply-formed life; spiritual, relational, and emotional health; shepherding with integrity and intention).
  • Be familiar with audiovisual systems (audio consoles, video switchers, related systems and software).


Additional:

While not absolutely essential, the below attributes would benefit someone in this role:

  • Well-versed in softwares and programs such as:
  • ProPresenter/Proclaim, ATEM Studio, Dante Virtual Soundcard, Boxcast, Canva, any DAW
  • Familiarity with audio / video routing.
  • Ability to preach 2-3x/year.
  • Familiarity with concepts from these books: The Worship Pastor, The Reset, Transforming Worship, and Ancient-Future Worship.
