Position Summary
The Senior Pastor serves as the primary spiritual leader of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, providing biblical teaching, doctrinal leadership, and vision for the growth and health of the church. The Senior Pastor will lead with humility and servant leadership, working in partnership with the congregation, deacons, trustees, and ministry leaders to shepherd the church, strengthen unity, and advance the mission of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
The Senior Pastor is accountable to the congregation and serves as a voting member of the Church Board alongside Deacons and Trustees.
Key Responsibilities
Spiritual Leadership & Teaching
- Provide doctrinal leadership and spiritual direction for the church, grounded in Scripture and aligned with Mt. Zion’s Statement of Faith
- Serve as the primary preacher and teacher, delivering biblically sound, Christ-centered sermons
- Lead regular teaching opportunities including Sunday morning worship, Bible studies, and additional gatherings as appropriate
- Maintain doctrinal integrity across all teaching ministries of the church
- Ensure consistency and unity in teaching and messaging across ministry leaders and church leadership
- Equip members for spiritual growth, discipleship, and maturity in Christ
Vision, Leadership & Church Direction
- Provide leadership in communicating and executing the church’s vision, mission, and long-term ministry development
- Promote unity, collaboration, and servant leadership across all ministries
- Encourage active participation of members in ministry and the use of spiritual gifts
- Train, mentor, and develop Deacons, Ministry Leaders, and future church leaders
- Foster a culture of humility, accountability, and shared ministry responsibility
Governance & Organizational Leadership
- Serve as a voting member of the Church Board alongside Deacons and Trustees
- Collaborate with Deacons and Trustees in a spirit of servant leadership rather than corporate governance
- Partner with committees and ministry leaders in planning, budgeting, and policy development
- Provide oversight for church staff, including performance reviews and development of approximately 6–8 direct reports
- Ensure effective, transparent, and honest communication across the church body
- Work under the authority of the congregation in accordance with church bylaws
Pastoral Care & Shepherding
- Provide pastoral care including visitation, counseling, and hospital visits
- Officiate weddings, funerals, baptisms, and the Lord’s Supper
- Support and equip church leadership to assist in pastoral care responsibilities
- Maintain accessibility and availability to church membership, with a goal of regular office presence
Evangelism, Outreach & Community Engagement
- Lead the church in lifestyle evangelism and outreach
- Encourage and support missions involvement locally, regionally, and globally
- Represent Mt. Zion Baptist Church within the local community
- Promote community engagement and relationship-building outside the church
Integrity & Stewardship
- Maintain integrity in doctrine, finances, leadership, and personal conduct
- Lead by example in servant leadership, humility, and accountability
- Ensure stewardship of church resources aligns with biblical principles and church priorities
Qualifications & Candidate Attributes
Spiritual & Doctrinal Qualifications
- Demonstrated commitment to Biblical authority and Baptist doctrine
- Alignment with Mt. Zion Baptist Church Statement of Faith
- Demonstrated humility, servant leadership, and pastoral heart
- Strong commitment to discipleship, evangelism, and church unity
Education & Ministry Experience
- Formal seminary education or equivalent theological training
- Previous pastoral or ministry leadership experience (Assistant Pastor, Youth Pastor, or similar roles preferred)
- Demonstrated experience in preaching, teaching, and doctrinal leadership
- Experience mentoring and developing ministry leaders and volunteers
Leadership & Interpersonal Skills
- Demonstrated leadership ability including delegation, coaching, and team development
- Strong interpersonal and relational skills
- Ability to collaborate effectively with Deacons, Trustees, and ministry leaders
- Demonstrated ability to unify and lead diverse groups within the church
- Effective communicator both publicly and relationally
Community & Ministry Engagement
- Demonstrated history of community involvement and outreach
- Passion for evangelism and community engagement
- Ability to represent the church well in community settings
Personal & Character Qualifications
- Meets Biblical qualifications for pastoral leadership

- Demonstrates integrity, maturity, and sound judgment
- Strong relational leadership and shepherding heart
- Commitment to long-term ministry investment and church growth
