Job Description

The Disaster Relief Director serves as the senior leader responsible for the strategic direction, leadership development, and external relationships of Texans on Mission disaster relief operations. Reporting to the Executive Leadership Team’s Chief Missions Officer, this role functions as a senior command-level leader responsible for building and leading high-capacity teams, cultivating relationships with emergency managers, churches, associations, other state directors, and state government partners, and ensuring organizational readiness for large-scale disaster response. The Director would not personally manage every operation, but install, equip, and lead those who do, while providing clarity, authority, and spiritual leadership in complex, high-pressure environments.

RESPONSBILITIES & TASKS

Strategic Leadership

  • Provide executive leadership for the disaster relief ministry.
  • Establish a proactive, long-term disaster response strategy that includes readiness, leadership, and volunteer pipelines.
  • Provide incident-level authority during major disaster activations and be able to delegate operational control to trained and qualified leaders.

Team Development

  • Build, mentor, and deploy senior disaster relief leaders.
  • Develop a succession-ready structure across all disaster relief positions and functions.
  • Set expectations, culture, and accountability for all disaster leadership personnel (paid and volunteer).

Develop and Build Relationships

  • Liaise with: State and local emergency management; VOAD and partner organizations; Church, denominational, and associational leaders; and other state disaster relief directors.
  • Effectively represent Texans on Mission as a trusted and credible disaster response organization in the sector.

Organizational Readiness

  • Ensure disaster relief teams, apparatus, operations, and equipment are ready, able, compliant, and scalable to meet the need.
  • Oversee, though not personally manage, logistics, equipment, systems, teams, and volunteers through competent leaders.

Spiritual and Ministry Leadership

  • Lead the disaster relief ministry with authentic Christian values and mission-mindedness, ensuring that it is done so with compassion, Christian witness, and professionalism as an indispensable element.
  • Serve as a visible spiritual leader during deployments and daily work.
  • Be adept at understanding, respecting, and navigating Baptist and other denominational polity and parlance.

REQUIREMENTS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excel in strategic thinking by developing and executing a comprehensive plan to expand disaster relief ministries and maximize the impact of volunteers.
  • Possess an exceptional ability to process extremely large amounts of information, providing quick problem-solving solutions, in an extremely short amount of time.
