CHURCH PROFILE

First Baptist Church of Kenova is located in the heart of the Tri-State Area (WV, KY, OH) between Huntington, WV and Ashland, KY. Over the past two decades, the Lord has truly had His hand on our church body and, through the work of the Holy Spirit, has grown our congregation both in spiritual depth and in number. With a current average attendance of 400 people, FBCK has an excellent representation of people from every age group, with our largest demographic being 30-40 year olds with young children.

We are a church family that has cultivated a “Berean” mindset, having a reputation for being impacted, sustained, corrected, and compelled by Word of God as our sole rule for Christian faith and practice. We are passionate about reaching our community and region with the gospel of Christ, supporting missionary work, and building strong Christian homes. Above all else, we desire to glorify the Lord with our lives, both inside and outside of our church building.

Doctrinal Distinctives

We generally affirm the Baptist Faith and Message 2000 and the 1689 London Baptist Confession.

Missions

We are currently giving 19% of our budget to missions with the desire and intent to increase that percentage each year. We consider our mission budget to be “the first check we write.” We are currently in the process of sending one family to serve diaspora Muslims in Europe through International Project. We have ongoing ministry partnerships Africa, Central America, Europe, and Asia.

Children & Youth Ministry

As a church, we are deeply committed to nurturing a love for the Lord in our children. We currently have two full time staff positions devoted to coordinating discipleship and outreach for ages pre-K through 18 year olds. FBCK has an AWANA program and youth ministry called “The Garage.” Both ministries have a host of parent volunteers and continually prove to be fruitful. A majority of the members of our church have either volunteered in or directly benefited from these ministries.

In addition to our children’s and youth ministries, the FBCK cultivates a culture that encourages families to educate and instill a Biblical worldview in our children. A large portion of our students receive a christian education through local Christian schools or home school.

Fellowship

Through the ministry of the Holy Spirit, our church body truly does demonstrate a love for one another, being purposeful in breaking down dividing walls in our congregation. We have a reputation for loving like Jesus and living our faith.

We have a well-attended fellowship dinner open to the entire church every Wednesday night. Following the fellowship dinners, our church meets in small groups all over our campus.

Sunday Morning Worship

We currently have two services (9:00 & 11:15) consisting of expository preaching and Biblically sound worship. Average attendance for 2024 is 465 as of mid-April. We value an overall expository teaching method from the whole counsel of God’s Word, understanding that all scripture is God-breathed.

Our adult Sunday school classes meet in between services. We encourage didactic teaching methods, recognizing difficult questions, examined in the light of the Word, lead to deeper understanding and deeper understanding to greater praise.

Leadership

We are led by a team of four elders (one staff elder and three lay elders) whom we refer to as Shepherds. Our congregation is served by a group of 15 active deacons.

Our ministry staff consists of a full-time Lead Pastor, Children’s Director, Youth Director, a Church Secretary, a Financial Secretary, and a volunteer Pastoral Care Minister.

Financial Information

Our budget for 2024 is $968,000 and our weekly giving in recent months has been exceeding our budgeted expenses.

The city also has a vibrant arts and culture scene, with a number of galleries, theaters, and performance venues. The Keith-Albee Theatre, a historic venue for live performances, is a popular destination for visitors and locals alike.

In terms of outdoor recreation, the region surrounding Huntington is known for its natural beauty and opportunities for activities such as hiking, boating, and fishing. The nearby Beech Fork State Park and the Wayne National Forest are popular destinations for outdoor enthusiasts.

The region's economy is diverse, with major industries including healthcare, education, manufacturing, and transportation. The area is home to several major healthcare providers, including Cabell Huntington Hospital, St. Mary's Medical Center, and the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine. The manufacturing sector is also significant, with major employers including the Huntington Steel & Supply Company and the Hirschbach Motor Lines trucking company.

Carter Caves State Park, Greenbo Lake State Park, Yatesville Lake State Park and Ohio’s Lake Vesuvius are all only a short drive away. Whether your pleasure is boating, skiing, swimming, fishing, camping or hiking, you’re sure to find what you enjoy in the Ashland area. First-class golf and tennis are also options.
