General Description:

The Controller oversees and focuses on the accuracy of financial reporting and overall financial management. It is a director level position reporting to the President of the School. While the President is responsible for the overall financial health of Summit, the Controller will oversee the finance department and cultivate and oversee budgets of every department at Summit.

This position is responsible for directing, managing, supervising, planning, and coordinating all activities and operations of the finance office. This position is responsible for maintaining accounting principles, practices, and procedures to ensure the compilation of accurate and timely financial statements and provides highly responsible and technical assistance to the President of the School.

Essential Job Functions:

General

·        Adheres to the Summit International School of Ministry Statement of Faith.

·        Actively participates in staff and/or departmental devotions, including but not limited to, worship, speaking, discussion, and prayer.

 

Finance Dept

·        Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements for the school and church.

·        Provide timely reports to the President of Summit International School of ministry.

·        Maintain internal control and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, and school/church budgets and actual expenditures.

·        Prepare board reports for the annual board meeting and translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels including finance and non-finance board members.

·        Analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; monitor progress and changes and keep senior leadership abreast of the school/church finances.

·        Oversee monthly and quarterly account reconciliations

·        Assist leadership in the annual budgeting and planning process; administer and review all financial plans and compare actual results with a view to identify, explain, and correct variances as appropriate.

·        Oversee all financial, project/program and grants accounting; ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with board designated budgets throughout the grant/fund period.

·        Manage organizational cash flow forecasting by working in partnership with President to assess the financial efficacy of school/ church operations.

·        Manage and track the performance of invested assets in keeping with policies and investment guidelines.

·        Oversee the accounting and payroll setup of employee pay and benefits.

·        Provide training for other staff members in the accounting department and supervises/reviews all staff work.

·        Provide leadership in strengthening internal communications with staff at all levels throughout the organization; create and promote a positive and supportive work environment. Initiate and oversee long-term projects as school/ church needs arise.

·        Manage banking relationships and negotiating fees with banks and other financial institutions. 

·        Manage all intercompany transactions and proper billing and accounting with parent company. 

·        Manage and negotiate relationships with health insurance, property insurance, workman’s comp brokers.

·        Oversee and manage Summit’s 403B employee investment plan. Discusses any changes with HR and supervises correct implementation/communication to staff. 

·        Perform the annual workman’s compensation audit and 403B plan audit.

·        Remain up to date on nonprofit audit best practices and state and federal law regarding nonprofit operations.

·        Ensure maintenance of appropriate financial procedures and supporting documentation.

·        Perform tax exemption filings and proper filings for sales tax returns.

·        Ensure legal and regulatory compliance regarding all financial functions.

·        Oversee all bank and wire transfers.

·        Oversee third-party processors used for revenue transactions and reporting.

·        Oversee all financial platforms for processing payments and billing.

·        Performs annual reporting to IRS (IRS Forms 1099/1042 Reporting).

·        Issues annual giving statements for school and church.


 

Qualifications and Competencies

·        Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.

·        5-8 years of experience in accounting or finance, including 2 years in accounting oversight role.

·        Strong knowledge of accounting principles (US GAAP), knowledge of non-for-profit fund accounting is a plus.

·        Strong understanding of general ledger accounts and journal entries.

·        Ability to write financial reports, prepare budgets, manage cash flow.

·        Familiarity with internal controls and compliance regulations.

·        Experience with overseeing all functions of day-to-day accounting (accounts payable/receivable, payroll, financial transactions).

·        Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

·        Excellent communications skills and problem-solving abilities.

·        Strong Microsoft Excel skills.

·        Experience with Abila MIP software and ADP is a plus.
