Pastor Position Overview
The Pastor of Union Church of San Salvador provides spiritual leadership, biblical teaching, and pastoral care to an interdenominational English-speaking congregation. The pastor works in partnership with the Board of Directors, Elders, and congregation to shepherd the church, promote unity, and advance the mission of following Jesus Christ in grace and truth.
The Pastor serves as the primary preacher and spiritual leader of the church while respecting the congregational governance structure of Union Church.
Key Responsibilities
1. Preaching and Teaching
• Deliver biblically faithful sermons that teach the Word of God clearly and relevantly.
• Provide spiritual leadership grounded in Scripture.
• Lead or oversee Bible studies, discipleship programs, and theological teaching.
• Equip the congregation to grow in faith and understanding of the gospel.
2. Spiritual Leadership
• Lead the church in prayer, worship, and spiritual growth.
• Maintain unity within a diverse, interdenominational congregation.
3. Pastoral Care
• Provide counseling, prayer, and pastoral care to members and families.
• Visit members in times of illness, crisis, or need.
• Officiate weddings, funerals, baptisms, and communion.
• Encourage spiritual maturity among church members.
4. Church Community and Outreach
• Foster a welcoming environment for the international community in San Salvador.
• Encourage fellowship, small groups, and ministry involvement.
• Support mission initiatives and outreach efforts locally and internationally.
Accountability
Union Church operates under a congregational governance model in which the General Assembly is the highest authority in the church and the Board of Directors serves as its elected governing body working collaboratively with the pastor.
The Pastor is expected to:
• Provide regular ministry updates and communications.
• Refrain from exercising unilateral authority in matters under congregational governance.
• Be governed by church statutes and bylaws and governance processes.
Qualifications
Spiritual Qualifications
The ideal candidate demonstrates the character described in 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1.
• Demonstrates a mature Christian faith and commitment to Jesus Christ.
• Agrees with the Union Church statement of faith.
• Exhibits humility, integrity, and a servant-leader mindset.
• Comfortable concerning the Holy Spirit and giftings in an interdenominational setting.
Education
• Seminary degree (MDiv or equivalent) preferred.
Experience
• Previous pastoral ministry experience preferred.
• Experience serving in multicultural or international churches is highly desirable.
Cross-Cultural Ministry
Union Church serves a diverse international community.
The pastor should:
• Be comfortable ministering in multicultural environments
• Demonstrate cultural sensitivity
• Understand the needs of expatriates, missionaries, and local believers
• Be open to learning Salvadoran culture
