The Director of Worship and Communication provides spiritual, musical, and administrative leadership for the worship life of Redemption Church Calgary North. The role focuses on planning and leading Christ-centered, biblically grounded, prayerful, and musically excellent services that engage the church in wholehearted worship in support of the church's overall mission. Further, the role provides directional communications leadership in support of weekend services and church-wide events.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Worship Services & Worship Planning
- Plan and coordinate all elements of weekly worship services (songs, readings, prayers, transitions, response moments) in collaboration with the preaching pastor.
- Align songs and service flow with the sermon series and church calendar (e.g., Advent, Easter, Christmas).
- Plan and co-ordinate monthly prayer and worship services in collaboration with the Senior Pastor.
- Lead worship personally most Sundays, while intentionally developing and scheduling other worship leaders (5-10 times a year).
- Prepare service plans, chord charts, and resources in the church’s planning software (e.g., Planning Center) and ensure details are finalized well in advance.
- Strive for a high standard of musical and technical excellence that remains authentic, Spirit-led, and spurs on the congregation in a life of worship.
2. Team Leadership & Development
- Recruit, audition, and onboard musicians and vocalists, and ensure tech volunteers (audio, visual, livestream, lighting) are recruited by the Director of Production.
- Further develop a communications team and provide directional and creative leadership, including worship themes, social media, and special presentation videos (e.g., God at Work videos), etc.
- Disciple, shepherd, and care for team members through prayer, encouragement, and relational investment.
- Provide regular training (rehearsals, workshops, one-on-one coaching) to grow musical skill, spiritual maturity, and team unity.
- Develop a leadership pipeline to raise additional worship leaders, WDs (worship directors), and tech leaders capable of leading in various contexts.
- Serve on the staff “traction” team. This team is responsible for setting the core values of the staff, maintaining our core focus, setting targets and goals in alignment with the direction of the elders, and achieving those things through an agreed-upon process.
3. Rehearsals & Preparation
- Schedule and lead weekly rehearsals that are spiritually grounding, relational, and musically efficient.
- Ensure band and vocal arrangements are well prepared (keys, arrangements, click/track decisions, transitions).
- Provide charts, recordings, and other resources in advance so volunteers can come prepared.
- Work with tech teams to sound-check thoroughly and troubleshoot issues before services.
4. Tech / Production Oversight
- Work closely with the Director of Production to ensure excellence in sound, visuals, and livestream.
- Oversee worship-related technical needs (in coordination with the director of production).
- Help establish and maintain consistent worship and production standards.
5. Pastoral & Congregational Role
- Model a lifestyle of worship, prayer, humility, and dependence on the Holy Spirit both on and off the platform.
- Lead the congregation in worship in a way that is welcoming, clear, and pastorally sensitive to new guests and long-time members.
- Collaborate with pastors on special services (baptisms, child dedications, funerals, weddings, nights of worship, prayer and worship services).
- Partner with Youth and Children’s Ministry leaders to equip age-appropriate worship leaders and teams.
6. Administration & Communication
- Develop and manage the worship and production budget in alignment with church priorities.
- Create and maintain schedules for bands, vocalists, and tech teams, ensuring healthy rotation and sustainable volunteer loads.
- Maintain the song library (CCLI reporting, arrangements, keys) and ensure legal and ethical use of music and media.
- Communicate clearly and consistently with volunteers about expectations, schedules, and changes.
7. Special Events & GCC
- Plan and coordinate all elements of worship services (songs, readings, prayers, liturgy, transitions, response moments) in collaboration with the special events coordinator/ team.
- Be a resource for new worship leaders in the GCC who need mentoring and help.
- Develop a pipeline for future worship directors.
- Involvement in Strategic Renewal is still being negotiated.

Skills & Experience
- Proven experience leading worship in a church of comparable size or complexity (or demonstrated readiness to do so).
- Strong vocal and instrumental proficiency (guitar and/or keys preferred) with the ability to lead a band.
- Strong understanding of modern worship music, hymnody, and congregational singing.
- Experience leading and developing volunteers, including giving feedback and coaching.
- Basic to intermediate knowledge of live sound, in-ear monitoring, click/tracks, and presentation software.Strong organizational, planning, and communication skills; able to manage multiple services and teams at once.
