The Executive Pastor will serve as a full-time staff member. The Executive Pastor shall have a deep abiding relationship with Jesus Christ, demonstrate spiritual maturity, and have a commitment to a faithful Christian lifestyle. The main responsibility of this position is reflecting the love of Jesus through a genuine love for people and to nurture these people in the love and admonition of the Lord Jesus Christ.


Job Title: Executive Pastor

Job Classification: Full-Time; FLSA Exempt


Job Summary:

The Executive Pastor shall be an ordained minister who reports directly to the Lead Pastor the Elder Session, and the Administration Team. The Executive Pastor, like the Lead Pastor, is responsible for ensuring that day-to-day operations of Holly Grove Church and the individual departments are executed faithfully and properly. The Executive Pastor executes the Lead Pastor’s strategic vision; leads, instructs, and provides feedback and assistance to the staff; oversees the church’s operations; and develops the congregation in stewardship and generosity. The Executive Pastor may be assigned specific tasks to perform or areas of ministry to administrate. Direct responsibilities include Christian education, counseling, and visitation that support the ministry of Holly Grove Church. This role requires a passion for both leadership development (helping the staff thrive) and practical stewardship. The right leader will possess a pastoral heart and instinct, a passion for gospel ministry, and proven skill in organizational leadership and management.


Reports To: The Lead Pastor, the Elder Session, and the Administrative Team


Direct Reports: Holly Grove Church Youth Minister, Children’s Minister, Administrative Professional, and various part-time facilities and grounds attendants.


Job Description for Executive Pastor

General Responsibilities:

• In absence of Lead Pastor, receive Lead Pastor’s ministerial phone calls, lead staff meetings, oversee and lead worship services, and other ministerial duties.

• Maintains a continued growth of personal calling and walk with the Lord through

• Bible study, prayer, tithes and offerings, and attend one spiritual growth conference per year.

• Make every effort to maintain a healthy home/work-life balance that promotes spiritual integrity in your home and family.

• Performs other duties as assigned by the Lead Pastor or Session.

Executive Responsibilities:

• Collaborate with the Lead Pastor to develop, implement, and monitor long-term strategic plans.

• Help to shape church and staff culture through healthy presence and effective communication that casts vision, creates unity, and advances the mission.

• Participate in conversations with Lead Pastor regarding overall staffing and ministry strategies.

• Ensure all ministries (youth, small groups, worship) align with the church’s mission and vision.

• Oversee the Discipleship Ministry of the church or other specialized ministry requested by the Session.

• Serves as an effective liaison to church committees and team ministry efforts.

Staff Management & Human Resources:

• Supervise pastoral and support staff, handle hiring/onboarding, conduct performance evaluations, and manage staff conflict.

• Provide leadership and oversight to direct reports through scheduled weekly check-in and as-needed mentoring and advising meetings.

• Consult, assist, and troubleshooting with other staff regarding their ministries. As needed, proactively speak into potential weak spots or areas of potential improvement to ensure alignment, effectiveness, and strategic development.

• Oversee Elder nomination, installation and ordination to include coordinating the congregational meetings, Elder ordination/installation and follow-on Elder retreat/s.

• Coordinate Session meetings to include setting and communicating the agenda, and moderate session meetings in the absence of the Lead Pastor.

• Oversight of ministry teams and responsible to help each team leader align with the strategic vision of the Lead Pastor and grow as a leader in the church.

Operational Oversight:

• Oversee day-to-day operations, including finance (budgets), facility management, information technology, and security.

• Reporting: Oversee annual Operations Report update and revisions, create annual budget with input from Lead Pastor/elders and create Session agendas.

• HR: payroll; benefits; hiring and firing; review & evaluation; policies & procedures

• Facility: leases, operations, equipment, maintenance, & capital improvements.

• Meet with the Operations Team quarterly to review insurance, employee handbook, finances, Venue and office space contracts, etc.

• Security Team: training; logistics; compliance.

• Ensure that the emergency evacuation plan is up to date and clearly communicated.

• Helps to set financial goals in collaboration with the Elder Team.

• Review monthly expenses and meet with staff as needed to evaluate spending

• Monthly bookkeeping and operations status review.

• Provide leadership to special projects such as fundraising, church expansion campaigns, etc.)

Congregational and Pastoral Care:

• Provide limited counseling, pastoral support, and assist with weddings/funerals as needed.

• Preach multiple times per year and serve in other roles as needed- i.e. calls to worship, prayer, announcements, coordinating baptisms/new member services, “Rose on the alter” and other seasonal service elements.

• Conduct weddings and funerals for church members as requested.

• Oversee ministry counseling needs from the church membership and requests from the community.

• Pray with church members and guests who express difficulties in their life.

• Oversee or make visits to nursing care facilities and homebound individuals and visit grieving church members.

• Oversee the Discipleship Ministry of the church or other specialized ministry requested by the Session.

• Engage with congregation members before and after both worship services.

Staff and Congregation Communication:

• Oversee Holly Grove’s database of attendees (visitors, new or regular), ministry teams and respective volunteers to ensure it is up to date and able to be used to engage target audiences. Update with letters of membership transfer notifications, congregation deaths, marriages and name changes, births, etc.

• Responsible for overseeing all mass communication with the staff, Elders, Session and ministry team leads/volunteers to align entire church team to strategic goals and operational requirements. Communication may include but is not limited to texts, emails, staff meetings, Planning Center (or other staff/volunteer management service) messaging, newsletters, and other daily/weekly/monthly communication products that best engage the target audience.

• Oversee Holly Grove’s website and social media presences to ensure all external messaging directly supports strategic and operational goals.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The noise level in the standard work environment is usually quiet to moderate. This position is primarily based at Holly Grove Church. Sunday participation in services, meetings, and activities is a regular expectation. Some evening, Saturday, and holiday work may be required to attend meetings, events, or address emergencies. Occasional travel may be necessary.
