Position Summary
The Director provides leadership, oversight, and administrative support for the Beacon of Hope Family Care Center, a ministry of First Baptist Church. The Director, under the supervision of the Elders, is responsible for ensuring that the ministry effectively serves individuals and families in need through compassionate, whole-person care that addresses both spiritual and physical needs, while maintaining alignment with the mission and doctrinal commitments of the church.
Qualifications
· A committed follower of Jesus Christ and in full agreement with the doctrine, polity, and values of First Baptist Church.
· Strong organizational and time management skills.
· Competence with basic computer programs and office equipment.
· Discretion with confidential and sensitive information.
· Ability to lead, manage, and communicate well with Beacon staff, church volunteers, Beacon participants, and donors.
· Ability to minister to people with a variety of backgrounds, personality types, and struggles.
· Formal education and/or training in management, business, nonprofit or church leadership is preferred.
· If not already a member of FBC, the applicant must be willing to relocate to St Johns and join FBC.
Primary Responsibilities
1. Operations and Program Oversight
The Director oversees the daily operation of Beacon of Hope and ensures that all services and programs are carried out effectively.
Responsibilities include:
● Overseeing the food pantry, classes, Bible studies, and other services
● Ensuring compliance with requirements of partner organizations such as the Greater Lansing Food Bank
● Addressing participant concerns and providing guidance during ministry hours
● Providing direction and support to volunteers and staff during open hours
2. Leadership and Supervision
The Director provides leadership to the staff and volunteers who serve within the Beacon of Hope ministry.
Responsibilities include:
● Providing orientation and training as needed
● Cultivating a ministry culture marked by compassion, professionalism, and gospel witness
3. Program Development
The Director provides strategic leadership for the ongoing development of Beacon of Hope’s ministries and services.
Responsibilities include:
● Evaluating existing programs and recommending improvements or additions
● Developing and implementing policies and procedures
● Ensuring that Beacon’s ministries reflect biblically informed principles of compassionate assistance in line with the “Helping Without Hurting” philosophy
4. Communication and Representation
The Director communicates the mission and impact of Beacon of Hope to the church, supporters, and the broader community.
Responsibilities include:
● Presenting quarterly ministry updates to the Beacon Committee
● Leading the annual Beacon of Hope presentation to the church
● Communicating with donors and supporters
● Maintaining the ministry’s public communication channels, including social media
5. Financial Oversight
The Director manages the administrative and financial responsibilities necessary for the effective operation of the ministry.
Responsibilities include:
● Working with staff and the Beacon Committee to develop and monitor the ministry budget
● Identifying and pursuing grant opportunities consistent with our mission and vision
● Maintaining ministry records and required reporting
6. Direct Ministry to Individuals
The Director participates in the ministry of Beacon of Hope by assisting individuals and families facing material hardship.
Responsibilities include:
● Facilitating enrollments and providing guidance to participants
● Helping connect individuals with community resources and services
7. Community Engagement
The Director seeks to maintain constructive relationships with local agencies and organizations addressing poverty and community needs.
Responsibilities include:
● Participating, as able, in community meetings or collaborations related to poverty and community assistance in Clinton County.
Reporting Relationships
● The Director serves under the Elders of First Baptist Church and in partnership with the Beacon Committee.
● Questions, ideas, and/or concerns should first be taken to the Pastor of Discipleship (who is a church Elder and a permanent member of the Beacon Committee). If this would entail a conflict of interest, the Director may speak to the Lead Pastor.
At-Will Employment
● The Director and/or the Pastoral Staff (as a group) have the right to end the employment relationship at any time.
● The Director may not be terminated for unlawful reasons such as discrimination or retaliation.
Work Schedule & Compensation
● This is a full-time (40 hours, M-F) position.
● This position requires the ability to handle emergency requests that may occur at night or on weekends (ex: emergency need due to a house fire)
● Compensation and benefits will be determined by the deacons in accordance with church policy.
