Job Description

Soul Care Pastor

Job Description

Job Overview

The Soul Care Pastor at Harvest Church provides biblical counseling, oversight for our Soul Care ministry, and spiritual support to individuals and families inside and out of the church. This role ensures that the body of Christ is shepherded with love, truth, and grace while developing a culture of spiritual growth, emotional healing, and relational restoration. The Soul Care Pastor will work closely with the Lead Pastor and ministry teams to provide Christ-centered care through counseling, mentoring, and biblical teaching.

Skills & Responsibilities

  • Counseling & Care:
  • Provide biblical counseling to individuals, couples, and families facing spiritual, emotional, or relational challenges.
  • Develop and oversee a structured soul care ministry that includes one-on-one discipleship, counseling training, and pastoral guidance.
  • Partner with biblical counseling networks and ministries to enhance resources and training.
  • Spiritual Formation & Discipleship:
  • Equip and mentor leaders in the Soul Care Ministry.
  • Foster spiritual growth and change through counseling, biblically based recovery groups, and mentorships.
  • Teach workshops and classes on biblical counseling and spiritual development.
  • Team Development & Leadership:
  • Recruit, train, and oversee counselors and soul care volunteers.
  • Provide ongoing training for staff and ministry leaders in pastoral care.
  • Collaborate with pastors and leaders to ensure a biblical approach to counseling and soul care.

Experience & Qualifications

  • A committed disciple of Jesus Christ with a passion for shepherding others.
  • A deep understanding of biblical counseling principles and their application in the church.
  • Master’s Degree in Biblical Counseling or Pastoral Ministry (preferred).
  • Formal biblical counseling certification (ACBC certification preferred).
  • 3-5 years of pastoral experience in counseling and discipleship.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and relational ministry skills.
  • Alignment with the mission and values of Harvest Church.

Living Out the Role

  • Who You Are:
  • You are a shepherd at heart—patient, compassionate, and eager to guide others toward Christ.
  • You see counseling not as fixing problems but as helping people discover the sufficiency of Christ in all things.
  • You recognize that deep, lasting transformation happens through the Word of God, the Holy Spirit, and the community of believers.
  • What Success Looks Like:
  • People in the church are growing in spiritual maturity and experiencing healing through biblical truth.
  • The church body has confidence in seeking biblical guidance from the Soul Care ministry, knowing they will receive care grounded in God’s Word.
  • A culture of discipleship and accountability is established.
  • Leaders are well-equipped to assist in the work of soul care.
  • Difficult conversations are handled with grace, wisdom, and biblical integrity, leading to restoration and reconciliation.
  • You stay current on counseling methods and continually grow in your ability to serve.
  • You invest in your own soul care to lead from a place of health.
  • Going Above & Beyond:
  • You proactively seek out those in need rather than waiting for them to come to you.
  • You develop, with the pastoral team, creative and biblical ways to disciple, counsel, and strengthen the church.
  • What to Avoid:
  • Becoming the sole provider of pastoral care instead of equipping others.
  • Allowing personal opinions to override biblical truth in counseling situations.
  • Avoiding hard conversations or neglecting biblical accountability.
  • Isolating from the church community by focusing solely on counseling.
  • Overextending yourself to the point of burnout rather than maintaining personal spiritual health and boundaries.
  • Losing sight of the privilege—remember that every counseling opportunity is a chance to point people to Christ and witness his transformative work in their lives.

About the Harvest Church

Harvest Church in Traverse City started with God calling and directing a handful of people to be focused upon the biblical mandate for the church to “make disciples.” With a variety of church backgrounds, the group began meeting in homes on Sunday evenings. God began to grow the group by bringing people who were also sold out to the thought of intentionally growing in Christ. Built upon the words of Jesus in Matthew 16:18, “I will build my church,” the first worship service was held on April 8, 2012 and by God’s blessing the handful of people continue to grow into a vibrant church.
