Job Description

St. Andrew’s UMC in Baton Rouge, Louisiana is seeking a creative and compassionate person who loves engaging children and families to serve as our new Children’s Director. Primary responsibilities will be leading Sunday Morning ministries including Children’s Church, Sunday School, and the Nursery as well as cultivating relationships to sustain the ministry. Throughout the year there are special events for children and families such as Vacation Bible School, Easter Egg hunt, Fall Funfest, etc.

This person will be organized, deeply relational and love engaging children. They will be supported by a children’s ministry team, a church staff ready to support them and a pastor who oversees their work.

The role is approximately 30 hours a week with a competitive salary that acknowledges experience and can grow with the position. 


Principal Focus:

-       Oversees all ministries to love and serve children from birth to sixth grade helping them come to know and experience the love and grace of Jesus.


Regular Duties:

  • Works closely with the Children’s Ministry Committee to create and sustain ongoing programs for children: Sunday School, Children’s Church, Nursery, Preteen Ministry, Special Needs, and any others.
  • Communicates with staff, volunteers and parents for all programs using multiple methods, both print and electronic.
  • Coordinates calendar with the calendars of other programs to prevent conflict. Advises Administrative • Assistant of items that need to be on the main church calendar.
  • Oversees special events that involve children; Trunk or Treat, Promotion Sunday, Christmas play, and others.


Skills and Requirements:

  • Volunteer Management: strong, proven ability to create and maintain a broad network of adults who are willing to work in Children’s Ministry.
  • Physical, Emotional, Religious, and Moral Development skills: Understanding of the developmental changes of childhood, and how their relationship to God, the church, and the world change during those transitions
  • Educational skills: Familiarity with different teaching techniques and the ability to assess which ones are appropriate in which situations.
  • Supervisory Skills: Supervises both volunteer Sunday School Teachers and paid staff, nursery workers
  • Organizational Skills: Maintains inventory of educational equipment and supplies, manages the needs of multiple volunteers at one time
  • Understanding of the Christian faith in the Methodist tradition.
  • Teamwork: ability to coordinate his/her work with others on the church staff, meeting his/her own goals while being considerate of the needs of other team members
  • Stewardship: Recognition of God’s gifts to us in the form of buildings, equipment, and space that we share with other Christians. Ability to be a responsible steward of those gifts, making sure that they’re both welcoming and well cared-for
