Job Description

Objective

The Assistant Pastor will assist the Senior Pastor and Elders in the management, oversight, and continued development of the ministries of Bethel Memorial Baptist Church. This role is intended to support the church’s vision, strengthen existing ministries, develop new ministry opportunities, and help shepherd the congregation through preaching, teaching, administration, visitation, discipleship, and ministry coordination.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience

  1. A clear testimony of God’s leading into ministry and a vital, growing Christian faith. 
  2. The ability to work effectively in a multiple-staff and elder-led ministry environment. 
  3. Strong administrative, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to relate well to people, especially lay volunteers. 
  4. An appropriate educational background, bachelor’s degree preferred, and/or meaningful experience in church ministry, Bible teaching, discipleship, and ministry leadership. 
  5. A commitment to continued spiritual, theological, and ministry growth. 
  6. A sincere commitment to the Vision, Values, Mission, doctrinal statement, and core values of Bethel Memorial Baptist Church. 
  7. The ability to utilize technology, digital communication, and social media in support of church ministry. 


Relationships and Accountability

  1. The Assistant Pastor will become a member of Bethel Memorial Baptist Church and will submit to the leadership, church constitution, doctrinal statement, policies, and core values of BMBC. 
  2. The Assistant Pastor will be supervised by the Senior Pastor and accountable to the Board of Elders. 
  3. After six months, the Assistant Pastor will become a member of the Elder Board, subject to church procedures and approval. 
  4. The Assistant Pastor will meet regularly with the Senior Pastor, as needed with the Pastoral Relations Committee, report monthly to the Board of Elders, and report at least annually to the congregation. 
  5. The Assistant Pastor will be evaluated annually by the Board of Elders. 


Salary and Benefits

Salary and benefits are to be determined based on experience, education, responsibilities, and the needs of the church.


Primary Responsibilities

  1. Give direction, support, and encouragement to ministry leaders and ministry teams serving the shared vision of the church. 
  2. Participate in worship services as needed and as God leads, including regular opportunities to preach. 
  3. Participate in staff meetings and maintain office hours balanced with the needs of church ministries. 
  4. Participate in the church’s visitation and caring ministry. 
  5. Assist with follow-up for new visitors and outreach opportunities. 
  6. Develop and establish a ministry to young adults through connection with area college student ministries, the establishment of Bible studies and fellowship events, and coordination with young adult ministries in other area churches. 
  7. Serve as a ministry resource in areas of personal expertise, including community ministry opportunities as appropriate. 
  8. Work with the church office to oversee the church calendar and coordinate church ministries. 
  9. Assist the Trustees with facility upkeep as able and appropriate. 


Secondary Responsibilities

Christian Education

The Assistant Pastor will help reestablish a Christian Education Board and work with Christian Education Ministry Coordinators to provide oversight and support for the church’s Christian Education ministry, including:

  1. The organization, operation, and oversight of the total Christian Education program. 
  2. The recruitment and training of new workers, as well as ongoing training for existing workers. 
  3. The evaluation and selection of curriculum that supports the church’s doctrinal statement. 
  4. Oversight of all Safe Kids requirements, including background checks and recordkeeping through the Servant Keeper program. 
  5. The proposal and oversight of the annual Christian Education budget approved by the congregation. 
  6. In the absence of a Christian Education Coordinator, assisting with or covering ministry needs as required. 


Children and Youth Ministry

The Assistant Pastor will coordinate and oversee children’s and youth ministries as opportunities present, including:

  1. Recruiting, equipping, and developing relationships with volunteer and adult leaders to promote ministry effectiveness. 
  2. Developing and nurturing relationships with children and teens to better understand their spiritual, personal, and family needs, their relationship to the gospel, and their connection to the church. 
  3. Developing ministry bridges that help children and teens grow spiritually and remain connected to the life of the church. 
  4. Strengthening parental and family ties to church ministries in order to promote support, involvement, and discipleship within the home.
