Position Overview
The Minister of Congregational Care leads the church’s pastoral care ministry, ensuring members receive spiritual, emotional, and practical support. This role combines direct pastoral care with leadership of a team-based care system (deacons, elders, and ministry leaders).
Responsibilities
- Provide pastoral care during crisis, illness, grief, and life transitions
- Conduct hospital, home, and hospice visits
- Officiate funerals, support bereavement care, serve in regular rotation for Sunday Call to Worship, prayer/altar calls, Communion, and other worship services
- Develop and steward the annual ministry budget; authorize benevolence and ministry expenditures within the established policies
- Lead and develop congregational care teams (deacons, elders, clergy)
- Ensure members are connected to ongoing care and support
- Support member engagement, belonging, and life milestones (baptisms, weddings, etc.)
- Build partnerships with hospitals, counselors, and community organizations
- Supervise staff/volunteers and manage care-related processes and records
- Participate in on-call pastoral care rotation
Qualifications
- Master of Divinity (preferred) from an ATS-accredited seminary or experience; equivalent theological education and significant pastoral experience considered
- Ordination in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) or active candidacy for ordination with a clear path to standing is preferred; candidates with credentials in other denominations are welcome to apply but must pursue credentials in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) within a year of their hiring.
- 5+ years of pastoral care experience with demonstrated responsibility for pastoral care or care ministry oversight
- Experience leading teams and developing volunteers
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Proficient using standard church management software, Microsoft Office, and Google Workspace
