Pastor - English Congregation

Montreal Chinese Alliance Church

Job Description

Pastor - English Congregation

Montreal Chinese Alliance Church - Hampstead, Quebec

A Brief History of MCAC

Montreal Chinese Alliance Church (MCAC) was founded in 1972 to minister to the spiritual needs of the growing Chinese immigrant community in the 1970’s and 1980’s. The strength of the early years of MCAC led to several fruitful church plants across Canada.

MCAC has also grown from within to now include 3 distinct, but interdependent congregations: A Cantonese-speaking congregation of about 150 attendees, a Mandarin-speaking congregation of approximately 80 regular attendees and an English-speaking congregation of approximately 125 attendees.

MCAC is, on multiple levels, a multi-generational church. Many of the families of MCAC cross congregations along generational lines, that is to say families that attend church together often do so in different languages. The English congregation, in particular, is mainly composed of second and third generation Chinese immigrants. The age of the English congregation varies from newborns to retirees though the largest percentage of the congregation is under 40, and is distributed fairly evenly amongst youth, students, young working professionals and young families.

Vision Statement of the MCAC English Congregation:

Because God loves us,

we will love Jesus, love his people, and love the world,

for Jesus’ sake.

We’ve summarized the vision in two words: Loved, Loving.

Job Posting

MCAC is searching for a candidate to specifically fill the vacant position of Pastor of the English Congregation.

Role of the Pastor of the English Congregation

We are looking for an applicant who resonates with our existing Vision statement and wishes to pursue it both personally and corporately.

As the Pastor of the English Congregation, the applicant would report to the Senior Pastor and to the board of Elders, but would be the primary leader responsible for shepherding the English congregation. They will work alongside the existing English Leadership Team (ELT) to support the currently defined ministry portfolios of Christian Education, Community, Fellowships, Missions and Worship.

This applicant has a clear fervour for the word of God, which is demonstrated in their ability to preach and teach Biblical truth, but furthermore, in their practice of daily Christian living.

The applicant is passionate for people, and would be actively seeking to develop and maintain connection with the individual members of the congregation. He would discern how best to support them in burdensome times, or encourage their spiritual gifting for service in the Lord. Our landscape has changed a lot in the last year - and the challenges that have resulted due to the COVID-19 pandemic will require initiative and creativity as the church learns how to worship together again.

Our next pastor would strive to help our congregation as a whole - but especially our youth - navigate the threats and challenges from civic and cultural influences. In our world today, societal values that present themselves through current events, school or social media often compete with our identity in Christ. They would need to address these issues with love and wisdom for the aim of God being glorified.

The applicant would have an outward heart for the mission field. Quebec is a vast mission field and is considered a least-reached people group, with only a small percentage of its people professing to be Christian. The candidate would lead by example in working out the Great Commission, while also encouraging and challenging members of the congregation to bring the Gospel beyond the church walls.
